It sounds horrible, but for it to be effective you must teach your dog to avoid it. I got this tip from a guy with 20 years experience in breeding and training police dogs. PETA types may not like it, but it's the only way to ensure these kind of sprays work.
For products like this to work, your dog must WANT to avoid the item when he smells it, which means you must teach your dog to HATE Fooey. The following advice may sound harsh, but stop and consider how many irresponsible puppy owners drop off their puppy at a shelter that kills unwanted animals.
Disclaimer: this is for your informational purposes only consult your vet and/or local certified animal behaviorist before using this advice.
There is no instant magic solution to preventing pets from chewing on stuff the process to properly getting your pet to HATE this stuff involves actually training it. To prevent your puppy from associating the taste with food, I _highly_ advise you to do this several hours before feeding them.
Step #0.5: Consult your physician before doing this! Spray a small amount on your own hand, lick it, read the following steps, and decide if you're ok with following them.
Step #1: Pour a small amount of the bitter solution into a cup, place a cotton ball the cup, and allow the cotton ball to soak.
Step #2: Take the cup and cotton ball to your pet (do NOT call them to you!), open their mouth, and put the cotton ball on their tongue.
Step #3: Hold their mouth shut, with the cotton ball inside, for one minute while ensuring they don't swallow it (they won't it tastes wretched! Yes, I did it to myself.).
Step #4: After one minute, release their mouth, remove the cotton ball, and all them to drink plenty of water. Let your dog go about its business and do not expect it to avoid anything sprayed with Fooey. The taste lasts for a long time I made myself vomit when trying to brush it off my tongue.
Step #5: Repeat steps 1-4 once per day for the next 2-4 days. After 2-4 days of this, your puppy will probably run down the hall when he sees you coming with the cotton ball. While that sounds horrible, it means he has learned to dread the smell and taste of this stuff. Once your puppy runs at the smell of the product/sight of the cotton ball, STOP PUTTING IT IN HIS MOUTH. This isn't about torturing the animal it's about him learning to associate the smell with the horrible taste. Remember, never ever call the puppy to you for one of these nasty cotton balls; you never call your puppy to come for something he won't like. If he runs when you get to him, consider it at job well done (and STOP putting them in his mouth) as the dog already learned to hate Fooey.
Step #6: Don't do this step until your puppy runs like hell when he smells the stuff or sees the cotton ball. Pour a few drops of the product into a spray bottle of clean water, shake, and liberally apply to items your puppy shouldn't chew on. Once properly conditioned, your puppy will avoid anything that smells like Fooey. You can't smell it, but trust me your dog can. Thats why dogs can sniff out drugs and bombs while humans can't.
Step #7: Don't expect your puppy not chew on sprayed items until he hates the has learned to hate the smell of Fooey. If you have to repeat steps 1-5 more than 4 days in a row, then your dog may not even perceive Fooey as tasting nasty, so terminate the process.
In review:
The company that makes Fooey is in no way associated with this review so, if you disagree, don't call them.
This post is not a substitute for common sense. Your dog should already have appropriate items to chew on. If he doesn't, consult your vet about proper chew items for your puppy ASAP. Chewing on things is a 100% normal part of puppy development and products like Fooey are not a substitute for your dog's developmental needs.
After consulting your physician, try the product on yourself first. After that, if you don't agree with the steps above, then don't follow them.
Consult a vet and/or certified animal behaviorist before doing anything above. They may or may not agree some professionals are against any type of aversive training (e.g., using products like Fooey or even saying no to dogs), while others have see no problem with it. This is a matter of professional opinion and you should trust them more than me.
These steps were provided for informational purposes only and do not constitute professional advice on how to use this product with your pet.
Please consider (and asking your vet and/or local animal behaviorist) using the steps above if chewing is a reason you're considering turning your pet over to an animal shelter. Most shelters kill animals if they're not adopted within a given time frame and using these training steps is more ethical than having a puppy killed because you couldn't teach him what to not chew on.
Dogs are not humans and do not learn like children. Do not use this method on your children and, similarly, do not expect your dogs to learn like your children do.
This post is not meant to encourage animal cruelty; please consult your vet and/or local animal behaviorist before performing any of the above steps. This is the only bitter-tasting training aid I have had any success with. I tried Bitter Apple on birds and ferrets and they seemed to ignore it. Fooey has worked well for me with ferrets and cats. I have used it to keep my ferrets from chewing electrical cords and to keep my cats from eating plastic bags. However, I have had very limited success with Fooey and my dog. I used the product to try to get him to stop chewing on himself and it did not exactly work. By this I mean that it was obvious that he found the taste unpleasant but it did not stop his chewing.Worked well on her leash but not our furniture, although it could be that our chairs are delicious (she seems to think so). Beware though, anytime you get the stuff on your hands or breathe close to where you spray it!! It is definitely bitter to people lol!

Im just going to copy and paste this review on all the fooey sprays because, well, it doesnt matter what size it is, it is the same LOUSY stuff! The bottle itself tells me it is the most bitter stuff ever, the best, contains several bitter tastes, etc. In all honesty, i tried this stuff myself. Taste HORRIBLE to ME. Like extreme bugspray. I was gagging and had the taste in my mouth for about an hour.
HOWEVER, it did NOTHING for my cat. Absolutely nothing.
She is OCD about licking her paws. So much that they are losing hair, and in the past have gotten irritated / scabby. Yes I know that cats must lick their paws to clean themselfs, but her paws just needed time without her obsessive licking to heal. (the vet recommended) So I gave a few spritz to her paws, which by the way comes out in a jet stream, and she promptly went right back to licking her paws. No pause, no flinch, nothing. I sprayed more on, and still.. no reaction. So I wondered if maybe her OCD was pushing her to lick through the bitter. So I gave a little spray to my fingertip and dabbed it onto her tongue. Still nothing. She licked her mouth twice and thats it.
This stuff was a waste of money!! I am angry I got rid of the reciept, I can not return it. (I purchased from a nearby Petco)
Please look elsewhere. This stuff works great on people, but seems tasteless to my cat!
Zero stars :( :( !!!Fooey does not work at all! It's like putting A-1 steak sauce on your furniture. My dog loves it! I have tried everything and nothing works. Don't waste your time or money on this product. Time to feed the puppy, she enjoys Fooey as a side dish.
