The Dogtra collars are great because of the range of levels. With many cheaper makes you only get 6-8 levels, so your dog may not respond to level 4 but when you hit level 5 they yelp and can't stand it. With 1-128 on the Dogtra, you can adjust levels nicely for any situation depending on how excited your dog is and not worry about hurting him/her. Durability seems fantastic on this unit as well.

My only problem with the 2 dog system is each of my dogs responds to different levels, which I now understand is the case with just about ALL dogs. If you have two dogs, the odds of them both responding the same to the same level is extremely slim. This makes it difficult to reinforce both of them at the same time as you have to zap one of them at their comfy level, then make a quick adjustment to hit the other one, and so on. I would suggest basing your purchase of a 1 or 2 dog system based on the number of remote control operators, not the number of remotes. So, if you and your wife are typically training both dogs at the same time, get two single-remote one dog systems. If you're the sole owner of 2 dogs and need to manage them both at the same time, I'd say grab the 2 dog system with the one remote. Hope this helps...

This or any other training tool, cannot take the place of one-on-one training and particularly cannot take the place of TIME! You must spend time with your animal, focusing on the animal and not distracted by other things. If you expect the animal to focus on you, you must model that. That being said, this is a good tool to enhance training! We adopted an 18 month old coon hound from a rescue. We spent about 2 months with her getting acclimated to her new life on our farm and in our family, taking her out of her pen on leash and teaching her simple commands (come, sit). Then we began training her to stay on the farm. That took time as well. We introduced her to the collar carefully. We only used it when necessary. After her initial shock (sorry had to use the pun) she was good with vibrate only. She has learned to stay on our property and not visit the neighbors. She is happy and content and much better mannered.

At first, we only let her out of her pen with the collar while we were out with her. We spent lots of time with her on that. Then,as she became accustomed to our calling her back and then vibrating when she didn't respond,we began to leave her out of the pen while we went in. The first few days, she would wait till we went inside and then get the courage up to sneak off property. What she didn't realize is we could still see her! One day she went trotting up the driveway toward the road which is about 700 feet from the house. She got to the gates, hesitated, looked around and then bolted thru the gates! I chuckled, opened the door, called her and when she didn't look back, vibrated her. She came back. Then for about a week, I would see her trotting up the driveway to the gates, kind of on eggshells looking. From inside the house I vibrated and she, never missing a beat or changing pace, would do a u-turn and trot right back up the driveway. After about a week of this, she began to realize she needed to stay close to home!

And here is the clincher. My son was at the gates and going to our neighbors and wanted the dog to go with him. She was trotting to the house across the front pasture. He called and she didn't turn. He vibrated. She by then was close to me just a few yards from the house. She ducked, circled and then went as close to the interior of the circle she lives in as she knew how to get. My son hit the vibrator again and she did the same thing. I called to my son, who rode his bike up the drive and explained to him that to her, the vibrator meant to be in the yard close to the house. She was confused about why she was getting hit again when she had already complied! He was astonished and of course we petted her and let her know what a good girl she is.

Long story but this demonstrates the usefulness of this tool when used sparingly and judiciously and not letting it replace the time spent with the animal. Now that we see she is good to stay home, we can begin taking her on walks off property. That will begin a new phase in her training. It will probably open a new problem to deal with but that is what training is.

Oh, and by the way, even after being used last week to track a deer that had been shot, and all the excitement of finding it and getting the legs as her reward, she still stayed home after that! This is a coon dog; she lives and dies by her nose. The training stuck!

This is a great system, expensive yes but well worth it. We have two german shepherds and tried a less pricier collar but they wouldn't hold a charge and the range wasn't as far. Our dogs have 25 acres to roam on but preferred to chase cars, after using the vibrate mode a few times, they no longer go near the road. We have never had to use the shock feature.

I ordered this because my previous set quit working. I think it was about one year old but not sure, could not find receipt. This time I will keep the receipt in a safe place. Works great when working... waterproof for my lab and even salt proof in the ocean. Easy to read buttons so you know what dog your trying to get to respond. I do not use the shock part, dogs react well to vibrate only. But if you do need to use the shock it has many setting.
