PetSafe Wireless Fence Extra Transmitter

PetSafe Wireless Fence Extra TransmitterWe have two dogs that would not stay in the yard and did not listen to voice commands while outside. When the wireless fence was set up, the boundary flags placed, and each of the dogs walked around the boundary for just two days, each of the dogs tested the boundary. The collar was set at level 3 and although they ran through, it was uncomfortable for them. After being chased down and returned home the collars were set to level 5. They each decided to test the boundary again. It was the last time! They now play in the yard and do not test the boundary. We no longer have to worry about where they are or when they will return.

I have had two of these units for six months, having ordered a second one when I discovered our yard shape and size required two units with an overlapping pattern. This is so much better than our in ground wire fence that was impossible to maintain. Our two Weimaraners learned the system in a day and have not escaped once. I wish the batteries were not integrated in the cap design as they cost more as branded items. The controls are a little hard to reach on the transmitters; but very reliable technology. Set up is trickier for sloped yards, but I had it up and going in about 3 hours of trial and error. The ability to put two transmitters in to accommodate a peanut shaped yard is impressive. The collar settings and signals seem to work well with the way dogs think, and are lightweight, non pokey. I don't even need the shocker prongs anymore (just warning signal) but you can't remove the prongs without the collar falling apart.

I have 2 very large dogs and this is a GREAT device. I plugged it in, set up the flags, worked with my dogs a couple of days to get them familiar with the warning sound and then let them loose. They both got corrected ONCE and only ONCE. The 1st time I mowed the lawn I removed the flags and did not need to put them back, the dogs quickly learned the warning tone and immediately turn around. A positive is that it continues to correct until the dog returns to the safe zone; it is not like other units that stop correcting the dog once it breaks the correction line. Another positive is that I can just unplug it and take it with me when I travel because all I have to do is plug it in and put on the collars and we are ready to go. Batteries are expensive but whenever I take off the collar, I remove the battery. My dogs learned very quickly that when the collar goes on and the warning tone sounds they need to turn around and they do.

So far, this has been a good product keeping our dogs contained in a rental where we aren't allowed to put up a fence. There's one major problem, though, that Petsafe is content to let continue as is...the replacement batteries for the collars have the shortest battery life of any product I've ever purchased. Only two weeks, I purchased 12. Four came out of the packages completely dead. Two worked for two days before they started beeping incessantly while my poor little pooches were running frantically around the apartment with me scrambling after them to remove the collars.

Some people are removing the battery from the battery replacement unit and finding success with that. Since I sliced my hand attempting that method, I decided that should be a technique reserved for those with more advanced fine motor skills than I have.

Now, it is conceivable that this would be a supplier issue. However, after doing some research, I discovered that this is a common occurrence regardless of the supplier.

I'm not sure what to do next, but I figured I can at least inform future shoppers. You can decide if you want the ongoing frustration of finding replacement batteries before you are committed to the product.

This product works much better than the manufacturer claims. It is also more flexible in terms of terrain following, and can be configured in many more units than their staff claims. I have over twice the number of transmitters configured than the mfgr claims is possible, and it works great.
