The ribbon is light so my little herding mix can move the bells easily with his nose and you get a good amount of chime, but my larger full-size Australian Cattle Dog can move it without fear of breaking.

My dogs watched me ring the bell and then open the door and the next day they had it figured out. I had to buy a second one because they were both looking for the ringer on the bedroom slider. I'm very pleased and it's quite pretty as well.
