I always try something like this on myself prior to using it on my dog. I think that's the only fair way to use something like this. When trying it out on myself, everything seemed to function as advertised, with the exception of the shock function. Although there are 18 levels of intensity, you get the same intensity no matter if the collar is set at "01" or "18".
I'm not wimp. I was in the Marines, I've been tasered and OC's for training, and I've been shocked by 240v. Not that the shock from this collar was as intense as those, but it was strong enough to make me feel a mild "burn", to make a heavy sweat instantly break out on my, and to make me throw the collar about 4 or 5 feet. This happened to me several times, as I tried several settings between "01" and "18".
Realizing that was defective, I decided to still try to use the anti-bark feature on the collar. I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it.
After having my dog wear the collar several times over the course of about 24 hours, I was getting concerned because he seemed shy of the collar. He's a big bluetick coonhound -he isn't really shy of anything. He started cowering on walks, tucking his tail between his legs. I live in the city, so there's a lot of noise going on, otherwise I would have caught this part sooner: when he cowered, I also heard beeps coming from the collar.
I stopped to check this out, and I heard the beeps again, accompanied by the collar vibrating. This collar was going off randomly!! It was buzzing and beeping at my dog without any stimulus!!
Absolutely most in-humane product made by what turns out to be an absolutely irresponsible company. Shame, shame, shame, shame on Aetertek. You've messed with my dog's head and betrayed his trust.
Please, do not purchase this product. For the price this collar is a good value. Programming it is straightforward and it offers beeps, vibration and and shock, each of which has a programmable range from quiet/weak to loud/strong. It comes with an anti-bark option, too. The pin on the charger cord pulled off after a few uses, but the seller sent me a new one free of charge. All in all I'm pleased with the purchase. Two aspects that could be improved on: I wish it came with different sized nubs (my dog has a very thin coat on his neck, and the standard-sized nubs are too long for him) and I've had to apologize to my dog a couple of times because the buttons are easy to press by mistake.
Someone had a review on Amazon that said the shock range was the same strength no matter how high or low you set it. I can confirm that this is not true, and like that reviewer, I too tested it on myself. The lowest setting might make your dog jump the first time (dogs have no instinctive understanding of the feeling of electrical shock), but I can guarantee it's a relatively mild tingle.
