The PetSafe collar works great and it does not hurt the dog. I bought the collar separate from the inground system and it was compatible. It has five levels of correction from beep to a electric pulse from a regular battery, and even if you think the electric pulse is cruel, I believe it is better for the dog to feel it few times and then it gets to back off when hearing the beep, than escaping from the house and getting hit by a car
