I use both bitter apple spray and gel as a means to stop my puppy from unwanted chewing. The spray is good for cloth (like a chair, etc.), but the gel works better for outdoor applications (such as the edge of my deck boards). The problem with wood is that both the gel and the spray do soak in, so even the gel must be reapplied a day or so later -until the pup loses interest. Still, it does work. Hot sauce works, too, but it does tend to stain bitter apple does not seem to stain most things, although one should test it in an inconspicuous area first.
