My older male dog, had begun to urinate in my living room after the introduction of a new younger male into the household. I never was able to catch him doing it so correcting the behavior effectively was just not happening. I purchased a large scat mat and a large extention and placed them on either side of the coffee table leg that my dog had repeatedly urinated on. The first afternoon it was down, I noticed a few drops of urine on the mat, cleaned it up and waited. For several days no dog went near the area, then the old fella must have forgotten and revisited one more time. It has been over a week with no accidents anywhere in the house. Hurray! Hurray! A problem that I have been trying to catch and correct for several months is finally under control! I plan to leave the mats in place for a few months just to insure the lesson is reinforced if need be and the behavior does not begin again.

I really like this product and would highly recommend to anyone with a similar problem. For those of you who worry about using something intended to give a shock, this is a static shock, like when you shuffle across the carpet and then touch a doorknob. My husband forgot and three times stepped on it with his bare feet in the same night. He said that it was not painful just startling and bit unpleasant. Come to think of it, I haven't seen him in the living room lately either (lol).

I cant believe how effective this mat is. one of our cats decided she owned our master bedroom and bed, to the point bad things were happening in our sleep. we tried everything, this was our second to last resort. We ordered the large version with battery only and placed it in front of our bedroom door. all it took was one step on the mat and the cats (2) will not go past the door way into the bedroom. We have had the mat for about 3 months now. The cats understand the mat has something to do with the shock, so we have to leave it out so they wont re-enter the bedroom, but it has been disabled for a month (we dont have a battery in it any more). just the presence of the mat keeps them away from the room. we tried touching the mat ourselves, thinking if the cats were going to go thru this we need to have an idea of what the effect was. it is similar to a mild static shock on the high setting. You can hold your hand on it getting 'shocked' repeatedly with only mild discomfort. I think it is more the scare factor that keeps the cats away.

I bought the scat mat on a last ditch, exasperated hope. My headboard is wide and serves as a bookshelf, nightlight, storage cubby. My cat, Squirt*, has determined it is the perfect spot to lie waiting for his snoozing family to wake in the morning. The alarm goes off, he hops down to snuggle and in a few minutes the day begins. All is fine until the weekend comes along. No alarm on weekends. I can hear his thoughts as I try to enjoy an extra precious 30 minutes of sleep: Why are my people sleeping so long? Where is my attention? Where is my breakfast? Hellooo, hungry bored cat here! Oh look! Mini blinds right next to me!

And so the flapping of the blinds begins. First it's a subtle little thwack of metal. Then we progress to full on banging. Then it's yowling and banging. I reach over my head and grab the little furry heathen, and kindly air-lift (aka launch) him to the foot of the bed. I must have some serious half-asleep pitching skills because the cat always lands on the bed and becomes an immediate projectile right back to the headboard.

Sadly, this has been going on for years. It has taken me this long to crack. My options: continue conceding and get up early, get a new bed or maybe, just maybe, the scat mat would work. (in our home getting rid of the pet is never an option).

I started the setting on low and tested it. The shock isn't more than when you pet them in the static of winter and shock their nose or ear. I certainly wasn't willing to use something so powerful I couldn't tolerate it myself. After a test run on each of the settings I decided it was annoying but not likely painful for him at all.

The morning after the set-up was interesting. He was waiting contently at the foot of the bed. Odd, I thought, but not completely unusual. The next morning I lay there, eyes half closed and waiting. He approached the headboard from my husband's side of the bed (away from the scat mat) , jumped up, and lay next to it patiently waiting. That was the give away. He'd obviously met the mat. I checked the indicator light and it did reflect it had been triggered.

While I never saw the mat meeting incident, we've had it set up for a month now and he hasn't once thwacked the blinds. Why on earth didn't I buy this thing sooner? For less than $50 I have my weekend alarm-free sleep back! I can imagine countless applications for various pets and their behavioral schemeing. Doorways, trash cans, furniture, if you have a challenge and a little imagination, this thing can work wonders.

I just tried this earlier in the day, this is very effective. I tested this mat out on myself first with the high setting, I decided to keep the shock to medium/ low setting for my cat as she is a petite 12 lb cat. Kitty likes to hop on the counter then on the top of the fridge then on top of the cabnites near the ceiling, I don't need paw prints on my counter thank you very much, much less the germs from the litter box or walking round on the floor where I prepare food. Well to test the mat I put the setting on medium and put the mat in a doorway I prefer my cat not use, she jumped two feet in the air and ran so fast I could not help but laugh, needless to say she has not used that doorway since then. I will leave this on the kitchen counter for a few days(I'll be sure to clear the area) to ensure kitty learns to stay off the counter. I also bought the power adapter...need to teach kitty to stay of some furniture i'll be getting.

I had bought this harness for my other dog, which is a Yorkie, and found it to fit the best, and work the best. It is also very easy to get on and off which I like. I used this on one of my yorkies. This little girl was a yapper to the extreme. All my dogs bark, but she could have won a medal for leisure yapping. The middle of the night, yapping on my bed for no apparent reason within 3 feet of my head, was what finally drove me to purchse this collar. She only weighs six pounds, so I was worried. Plus I was scared that random barking from my other dogs would set it off.

Well.....there was no reason to fear. The collar only responds to the throat vibrations of the dog wearing it, so nothing else sets it off. I tested the 5 levels on myself before putting it around her neck. I could not feel level 1 at all. Level 2 gave a slight tingling. Level 3 a bit more, but levels 4 and 5 hurt. I put it on level 2 and decided never to go above 3.

Well it was a miracle. She figured it out in the first day. There was no emotional side effects that I could see and her personality remained the same, albeit, less noisy. The collar has a built in counter that tells you how many corrections it gave when you turn it off. After the first 2 days, it showed over 30 corrections. After 2 more days, it only showed 3. I made the mistake of taking it off after a week thinking that my problem was solved, but she was back to barking within a week. I guess the key is to leave it on for several weeks or a month to break the habit entirely.

The Bark Limiter XS is extremely effective for my Belgian Malinois. As you may know, Mal's are very barky.. which doesn't go over very well in my condo. The bark limiter has 5 different settings (for extra stubborn dogs), and I haven't had to go past setting number 2 for my dog. The thing I like most about this collar is it has a bark odometer to tell you how many times the dog barked. This way you can check progress. We have a 5 yr old Beagle (which are notorious for their obnoxious howl/bark) that has some pretty bad separation anxiety. Every time the garage door would go up, it would send him into a barking frenzy in which that time he would be completely inconsolable. The same went for anytime somebody came to the door. He would bark and howl and screech until we drove off/came inside/or answered the front door. We tried spraying him with water, lighting popping him with a newspaper, shhing him, calming him, and even a noise collar. Nothing worked.....well....the noise collar worked for about a week. But, he finally got used to the noise and then we had barking AND high-pitch noise. It would also squeal whenever my dog shook his head. His big floppy ears would activate the collar. No good.

Luckily, we have a friend who is a professional dog trainer. We explained the issues we were having and he immediately recommended this collar. We were a little hesitant to use the "shock" collar, but my wife is about to have a baby. If the barking continued, the dog would have to go, and neither my wife or I really wanted to have to do that. We love our animals.

So, we ordered the collar and I tried it out on myself on the different levels. I wouldn't even call the "shock" pain. I would say more of a "weird sensation." Maybe even a little uncomfortable. We tried the first setting which worked at first, but then he got used to it. The same for the second setting. We are now on three and the barking has completely stopped. Completely. It's amazing. This collar has made all the difference in the world. We can now bring a sleeping baby in the house and she won't get woken by the shrill barking. The motion sensor feature is also awesome. It's nice that when my dog is barking in his sleep something he can't help he doesn't get corrected for it.

There is still some good bit of whining from the dog, but that, we can deal with. It shouldn't wake the baby. The ONLY problem I have had with the collar is sometimes when my dog yawns audibly, it will "zap" him, which I hate for him. But, that's just the sacrifice to be made I guess. Not much we can do about that. Overall, the collar remains the best $100 (or so) we've ever spent.

We have a Weimaraner with some pretty significant separation anxiety issues which cause him to bark (more like shriek) incessantly while we are away from the house. Before this, we tried a citronella collar, professional dog training, lavender oil, a radio, pleading, cajoling, and pretty much everything else to get our dog to calm down, but nothing worked. On day 1 of using this collar, we used level 2, and the barking (and overall anxiety) reduced about 50%. On day 2 we used level 3, and the barking totally stopped. And since then (about 4 years ago), we've had no problems. When we leave the house, we put the collar on, and the dog goes to his bed and lays down. The collar is used almost daily and has really gotten beaten up, yet amazingly it still works. Except for a few battery replacements, it's needed no maintenance. Pruven PP-14 21 by 23-Inch Super Absorbent Training Pads

I have an old cat who has chronic renal failure and, I suspect, is a tad senile. She will poop in her litter boxes but she does number one on carpet or other soft absorbent surface. We (my cat and I) are now living in the non-carpeted part of the house. I have been using Iris brand training pads and was anxious to compare their performance with these pads. For my cat I place a small folded blanket on the vinyl floor and cover it with a training pad. I use the blanket because my cat seeks out cushy (which equates to absorbent in her tiny mind) places to pee on. The system has been working well for us. Because my cat has CRF she drinks a lot of water. She holds it until she is about to burst and so she puts out a lot of urine all at once. The training pads have to work hard to keep up and both brands do an acceptable job most times depending of course on how close to the edge of the pad she squats. I am home a lot and when I go out, three times a week, I am only away for two hours. So the pads are used only once and in our situation I can't imagine them being able to hold more. I used to immediately go to deal with the pad as soon as it was used but I've learned to wait at least a few minutes because the pad needs time to fully absorb making for a tidier pick-up and dispose process. These pads are a few inches larger than the medium sized Iris pads and they have a smoother slicker waterproof backing. Also these pads are fluffier and the absorbent side feels more cloth-like than the Iris. Bought in 100 count packs from Amazono the Iris pad are around 22 cents each and these pads in the 50 count pack are about 25 cents. If these pads out-performed the Iris or if the larger size mattered to me then I would switch brands. But the two brands are equally effective and the Iris are large enough for my purposes so I will stick with them. I thought the softer cloth-like feel of the Pruven pads would cause my cat to prefer them but she usually picks the Iris one to go on.

Just recently, I got a new puppy. Though, I'd been using training pads before that, (Sergeant and Out! pads) for one of my male cat's who likes to urinate outside of the box. I picked these out because, they had attractant on them and the Sergeant pads, I had used didn't have it.

My puppy has been using these probably 75% of the time, more than he went on the unscented pads. It seems like the attractant helps, along with praising him each time he uses them. They seem to be very absorbant and so far they haven't leaked through the plastic backing.

Though, before I got these in the mail, I found another brand with attractant (Out! training pads) at my local Family Dollar for $4.00 for 14 padscompared to $7.98 for these. These are the same size as the Out! pads at 21"x 23". The Out! pads are also quilted and the Pruven pads are not quilted, and they seem lighterweight, so the puppy is more apt to drag them off when he walks off the pad.

Overall, these work and they work well, but, I do think they are quite expensive. When I compare $4.00 to almost $8.00 and the fact that these are not quilted, I won't be switching over brands, as the Out! works as well for my puppy's and my cat's needs and also has an attractant.

Our use for a puppy pad are perhaps a little different than most; we have two older small seven pound Maltese brothers who are now 15 years old. As the years have progressed their faculties, eyesight and mobility, have been hampered by their age but their little spirits remain strong. They still romp about like puppies from time to time and they enjoy their daily treats with gusto. Unfortunately, their house training has been slipping their minds of late and the occasional accident seems now inevitable. So rather than treating these as training pads, we use them as little 'gardens' to save stress on all concerned.

We currently buy Nature's Miracle No Tracking Absorbent Training Pads, 100 Count Box which our dogs use almost without fail. It saves us admonishing little dogs in their twilight years and also having to mop up our kitchen frequently. Therefore we're happy with the status quo but granted it's not a perfect scenario but considering the alternative it's okay.

So given the chance to try a different brand was interesting. First thing I noticed was the Pruven pads were just a tiny bit smaller than the Nature's miracle. Only an inch or two but noticeably so. Plus they're pure white, even the borders, so when I placed it down on our white tiled kitchen floor with light colored grout it virtually disappeared. I may be wrong in this line of thinking but the strong deep outer green border on the nature's miracle I think acts as a boundary limit and our dogs seem to confirm this. Without the distinction I felt their aim might be a little off. Of course if your kitchen floor is a different color then the white may act as an encouragement for your little one.

Secondly the Pruven seemed to be not as thick and whilst that doesn't initially necessarily mean they're any less absorbent sadly in our case seems it does.

As I suspected the first night proved that aim was off, with several splashes outside the area. This could be due to the smaller size or indeed the chameleon nature of the white floor and white puppy pad. The absorbancy was also not as good with actual drips coming through the back after just three 'visits'. The Nature's Miracle brand can withstand many more uses than that before replacement and a larger puppy could possibly result in one visit per pad with the Pruven brand.

Ultimately in our case these didn't work as well as desired. Of course as originally pointed out, our criteria is a little different but given that these are more expensive that the ones we currently use, are smaller and seemingly not as absorbent then I just can't recommend them as they stand.

We use the BREEZE Cat Litter System for our 7 year-old female cat and it works very well; it utilizes a lower-tier tray that holds a pad to absorb the urine that passes through the upper-tier pellet litter. We received a sample of the Pruven 21 x 23 inch pads to test out with our cat who occasionally misses when using her box: we tried substituting the Pruven pad for the Breeze pad first, and then we also tested them around the box.

Results: as a Breeze-pad substitute, the Pruven pads are not as absorbent...but the comparison is not a very fair one since the Breeze pads are about twice as expensive. The Pruven pads worked better as general floor pads to catch the errant oversprays.

We took off a star because the pads are a bit costly since they run about $8 for 14 pads. Compare this to IRIS Neat n Dry Floor Protection and Training Pads for Puppies and Dogs, 200-Count which run about $50 for 200 pads.

If your pet has a chronic need, the latter product might make more sense.

We've been using Simple Solutions Simple Solution Puppy Training Pads, 100 Count since our first Yorkie came home six years ago, with brief dalliances with other brands. We always end up going back to Simple Solutions and trying Pruven hasn't changed that pattern. We now have two Yorkies and go through a lot of training pads since they are virtually indoor dogs unless they are going for a walk on a leash (we have too many types of wild predators that would make snacks of our dogs to let them be outside on their own). Simple Solutions are thinner, slightly bigger and reduce the odor better than the others we have tried, including Pruven.

Pros:

white which looks nicer than beige (Simple Solutions) or blue (Petco brand)

Cons:

thicker

slightly smaller and every inch makes a difference

odor seemed stronger with these
