Pet Agree Ultrasonic Training Aid

I was somewhat apprehensive about buying an ultrasound device for dog training, because some of the other products were given lukewarm reviews. But at $20 for this handheld device, I thought I'd give it a try. Well, I am thrilled. This is not an overstatement. My husband and I have dogs that are barking breeds. And bark they do. One starts, and it's pandemonium. We have been going crazy. Nothing stops them once they begin. This little device is the only thing that works. I pair a hand gesture with the Pet Agree. I put my hand out toward the dog as if I'm telling a car to stop, palm out. At the same time, I push down in two short bursts on the Pet Agree. Everything immediately goes silent. The dogs don't like the sound. My hope is that they will eventually stop barking with my hand motion alone, and I won't need to use the Pet Agree anymore. I recommend this product.

I have been a professional dog trainer for 30 years. I have used the Pet-Agree product and it does what it's supposed to do: delivers a high-frequency sound that only dogs can hear (although if you put it up to your own ear you will hear a faint sound).

I think the reason people reviewing this product are saying it doesn't always work, or wears off after a time, is due to the fact that ultrasonic devices ALONE won't solve your problems! (1) You must first determine why the dog is doing what it's doing, and often that will be something in the environment/lifestyle that you need to change; (2) the purpose of the ultrasonic device is merely to INTERRUPT the behavior long enough for you to reward the brief stopping of the behavior and then insert a more appropriate behavior into the "void" you created by using the ultrasound (counterconditioning). To just point the device at your dog and press a button (as if it were some sort of "magic wand") might work sometimes, but it won't get to the root of the problem, and after a while most dogs will start igorning the sound and go on doing whatever they were doing. This is the "lazy way" to try to solve a dog's behavior issues and will not have long-lasting effects. Without positive reinforcement added to the process, it becomes a very negative, vicious cycle.

If you want to be successful using this kind of product, consult a good positive dog-training book, or call a professional to help you.

UPDATE APRIL 2012: I would like to add a few more thoughts to my original review: I was referring specifically to training one's own dog, as it is probably impossible to train a neighbor's annoying dog w/o the neighbor's cooperation! There are sonic devices available that you can post permanently in your yard, but unfortunately, these might not always work, either.

Using this Pet-Agree device would not permanently solve the "neighbor's barking dog" problem in most cases. It might stop the dog for a few seconds, but then they would resume barking at whatever was triggering them (which is sometimes just plain old boredom).

I agree that one has to speak to the neighbor, if at all possible, and find out what your town's barking ordinance is (it differs from place to place), and notify the authorities if the dog is exceeding the accepted limits. However, I do sympathize with Paul, who has had no luck going the conventional route. Unfortunately, this does happen much of the time, and we have limited control over someone else's pets (or children, for that matter)! :-)

As far as how to combine positive reinforcement with a "startle device" such as the Pet-Agree: It would be helpful to use clicker training if one is knowledgable about the concept and coordinated enough to manage it (a good book, video, or trainer could help you).

But even w/o a clicker, I would proceed this way: Use the Pet-Agree to interrupt the barking (if it works on your dog). Coupling the word "Quiet" with the startle device, as suggested by another poster, is valid. As soon as you get a couple of seconds of silence, click/praise and give your dog a tasty treat. Call the dog over to you to get the treat and then redirect his attention AWAY from what was triggering him to bark in the first place. If he tries to go back and bark some more, repeat the above process. Redirecting his attention is key.

Contrary to a lot of dog owners' beliefs, a dog does NOT have to sit by the window and bark at everything all day long! This is barrier frustration and it will get worse. Give your dog interactive, puzzle toys and safe "chewies" to keep him occupied AWAY from the windows while you're not at home. Block his access to troublesome windows in any way you can, if at all possible.

Most of all, make sure he gets enough EXERCISE!!! Behavior problems are caused or exacerbated by insufficient exercise. Do obedience training with him, on your own or with a trainer, and practice it every day. This will give him a job to do. Much barking is caused by boredom, unexpended energy, and frustration. After all, when a dog is bored, he has limited options. He can't watch TV, surf the net, talk on his smartphone, or read a book. It's either barking, chewing, or digging...none of which are usually acceptable to humans!

As for the "smarty" dogs who manipulate you to get the treat, if you suspect this is happening after a while, just praise the dog for a good response but do NOT click or treat unless you feel it is a genuine situation, not merely a ploy to get a treat.

Hope this is not too rambling and involved. As you can see, if you have real problems, you might need the help of a professional. But good luck to all of you out there with barking dogs! (BTW, the Pet-Agree can be used to interrupt other behaviors, such as jumping up).

I just moved into my first place and the only negative is my neighbour's two very large,very aggressive,very bark-y dogs. They look like Rott/Pitbull mixes. They don't allow me or anyone else to get near the fence on my side and bark incessantly when anyone comes into my driveway. I went as far as to install an extra layer of chainlink on my side and still they get frenzied and hurl themselves up on to the fence causing it to lean. Honestly I didn't have high hopes for this product , but for twenty something bucks I was willing to give it a try. I have two small dogs one is a miniature pincher and chihuahua mix and the other is a mix of five different dogs including doberman, chihuahua, and some kind of terrier. Anyway they make a sport of sitting in the window and barking like mad whenever someone walks or drives by. When someone comes to the door they suit up for war and are ready to bark till the death! Once they start barking their brains go blank and it's nearly impossible to break their focus and get them to stop. We bought this for our 90lbs german shep/lab mix puppy, just to get him to come when we call him from the yard, keep him from running off in the woods, etc. Sometimes the collar works and sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes we can get it to shock, and sometimes it just wont. We can get it to vibrate and get it to make noise, and get it to change settings, but sometimes it just wont shock! Simple Solution Disposable Diapers, Medium, 30-Count

These are great for an incontinent dog; they can be easily removed and put back on. However, the opening for the tail does allow the dog to defecate outside of the diaper. We used it for our old dog who had had a stroke and was suffering from dementia and had little control over her elimination. I would definitely recommend these if it is simply a matter of containing your dog's urine.

The diaper works fine on my Cocker Spaniel. Sometimes I need to readjust the tape holding the diaper on as my dog tends to wiggle a lot. I use the diapers for her incontinence and they work fine, she is comfortable wearing the diaper.

I rarely give 5 Star reviews, because basically, any product can be improved upon. That being said, this product does indeed do what it advertises it will do on carpet and car upholstery. I haven't used it on furniture, because my furniture is leather.

It has a nice, clean, fresh scent, and following the directions when applying. If your carpet, car, or furniture is heavily embedded with pet fur, I would suggest applying this with a second application after completing the first. Based on my observation, it releases about 90% of the fur embedded on vehicle upholstery, depending on how strong your vacuum is, and virtually 100% on carpet, again depending on your vacuum.

Overall, a very good product that I have recommended to friends.

Don't mess with the other brands. I tried a couple and should have just gone with the Gentle Leader first. It's worth a few extra dollars. I went with the deluxe version because it has the padded nose strap. Just make sure you take the time to watch the excellent DVD packed with the product. It is essential to fit the collar properly, and also take the time to get your dog used to it. You CANNOT just put this thing on your dog right out of the package and take him/her for a walk outside. You've got to put it on and take it right off several times a day, for a few days. All the while giving your dog treats and high praise. Make it a happy and fun experience. Let him smell it first if he wants to. Then let him wear it for a few minutes a couple times a day for a few days. Giving lots of treats while he wears it. Then after maybe a week, try walking around the house, and finally a short walk outside. He will probably try to paw it off. That's why it needs to fit snugly around the neck. Forget everything if you've used choke, prong collar, etc. NO jerking, yanking, or popping the leash!! Just gentle pulls with two fingers and thumb on the leash. Lead the nose gently and the body follows. It's great if you get your dog used to it gradually. Just like you did if you trained him to stay in a crate.

Awesome product, if you've been thinking about buying this one stop thinking and just buy it....!!! Has made a 100% improvement in walking our Jack Russell Terrier. Its an amazing product and comes 5 star rating from me...!!!

The Gentle Leader Head Collar was the first product that "clicked" for my smallest, but dominant dog. She's a poodle/beagle cross, with more beagle personality outside. Of our three dogs, she is the only one who walks with her head constantly on the ground, coursing back and forth, pulling and sniffing all along the way. She had obedience training years ago with a choke collar, which worked, but I won't use that collar anymore.

The head halter configuration works as well for her as it does for horses. Where the head goes, the body must follow. It took 3 weeks of gradually increasing the distance (with occasional rebellion and clawing at the strap over her nose), but now, when she has the halter over her nose, she trots along at a heel position, sitting whenever I stop. The comical part is that when I take the loop off her nose as a reward for good behavior, she reverts immediately to pulling, sniffing and generally ignoring me.

I'm very glad I watched the video. This bossy little girl was a hard case and I didn't enjoy the early walks very much. But I hung in there, and now we're fine.

I bought this video and the same video for the German Shepherd puppy and guess what? The were identical outside of the people talking, the dogs in the video and the breed history of the dog. VERY generic. Breed history is interesting but was still not any more informative than an internet search or a short book.

We have used one of these before on a larger Newfie mix with some success. We adopted a three-year old Lab mix and this form of lead was more troublesome than helpful. So, I guess it can work with some dogs but definitely is not a cure all solution.

This thing is great. We use it in on our dog in our yard, on walks, and occasionally even inside our home. It needs recharging pretty often if you don't turn it off but the recharging is a snap. The on/off switch and indicator are actually quite easy to use but we don't always take the time to turn it off. Remarkably, the battery life does not seem to have declined at all after almost 2 years of regular use. We are also very pleased that the seal on the charging connection seems to work well as our dog swims with this collar regularly with no ill effects noted. We tried it out on our kids (after trying it on myself first) to make sure we weren't hurting our dog too much. It's really just an annoying zing and not what I would describe as painful. Well, our dog does not like it so he has become very obedient after just a few zings. The negative tone is all we need now and he comes running, ready to obey. In fact, our dog's behavior seems to be better when he just has the collar on.

Have had the single dog unit for almost a year now, but needed a way to control 2 dogs at once, since only the one with the collar on would behave. When you add another collar to the system (up to 3 total) you lose the beep and tick modes, but that's OK since I never used the beep and the tick didn't always get their attention. I'm a very dedicated and compassionate dog owner. I was very hesitant to buy this product but my dog always knew when he was 'off leash' and would not listen or come every time when called. I take him for walks/runs a few times a day and run him for a 6-9 miles a week. I've spent a few months training him at the park and the dog park on basic obedience commands. He is great around the house, on leash and when he knows I will correct him if he chooses to ignore me. I felt like the only way to prevent loosing control of him when I let him off leash was to have a invisible long leash in the e-collar.

I've recently started using the 'nick' button on my dog during a camping trip and the result was amazing. Make sure you dog knows all the commands, especially come, and that you have positive control of your dog when you first use the collar. I let him wear it for a few days before I started using it. This was suggested in the operating manual and will prevent them from associating the collar with the stimulation. I've used the device on myself on 4 and that is as high as I will go with my dogs as well. It is definitely enough to get their attention and for the most part my dog will respond without yelping at a 2. This is a very low level of stimulation. My dog was not very treat or affection motivated but he loves to hunt and sniff around. This allows him to do that while keeping his attention on me and returning to me every time I call.

I was very concerned after reading all the opinions out there about 'ruining a dog' by using an e-collar. I've seen the opposite result. My dog loves the freedom that this device provides, and as a result of my increased trust in him he is a lot happier with his new found freedom on hikes and camping trips.

This collar has allowed a great deal of freedom with my dog and we both enjoy that a lot more than the long leash or the search after he bolts after a rabbit. I enthusiastically recommend this product to any dog lover who has had a scare after a dog bolted to chase another animal.

Works flawlessly, super easy to add to existing transmitter and nice having only one transmitter to carry on hikes in the desert. Excellent range (not 400 yards tho) as long as there aren't too many washes/hills/valleys. Feel safer being able to "touch" the dogs from a long distance to recall them after their runs after jack rabbits and yes, after coyotes too! Also worked great to warn them of dangers such as rattlesnakes...they hear/smell a rattler now they steer clear! Using it with a German Shepherd and a Samoyed/Chow mix. Both can be stubborn...read esp. the Chow :) but a setting of only 2 gets their focus back where it should be.

Don't waste your money. The necklace part does not stay locked in the unit that emits the light. I have a 9 pound dog and just him walking was enough for the necklace to come apart and wind up on the ground. The light itself is very hard to turn on. I had to rest it on the table and push extremely hard. That is while the light worked. It lasted a whopping 2 weeks before it started to turn off by itself and then another week before it completely quit.

Garbage

A lit collar seemed like a great idea for my dog walks at night. However, this collar arrived with ZERO instructions for use. Well, being a good primate, I thought I could figure it out. You seem to put one end of the plastic tubing inside the little LED box and then turn the little dial to "lock" to secure the tubing. But no...turning the little dial does absolutely nothing. The plastic tubing continues to gleefully slip out and nothing secures it inside the LED box. On my Australian Cattle dog, this is going to stay on for about .05 seconds.

The little LED collar hang tag that comes with this awful collar IS very useful, but you can buy it elsewhere for around $5 less and skip the idiotic collar.

Like the previous review, this arrived without any instructions on how to put it together. I went back online, reviewed the pics which are minimally helpful and it does work. The key is inserting the tube into the side holes not the holes on the front. This makes the whole tube glow & it stays in place once you turn the "locks". I actually ended up inserting into one side, running the tube thru a front hole, back thru the front hole on the opposite side and then ending on the last hole on the side. I have no idea if that is right but it does work and the lights are really bright which is what I was looking for. I have 2 large, energetic dogs and it stays around their necks without any issues. The clip on lights seem to be great too although I recieved one in its package and one without packaging. It could be a return but it does work. Four stars for the brightness of the collar but I would give the sellar 2 stars for packaging and / or lack of packaging & instructions.

The light has an extreamly difficult button to push and I cant get the collar to lock so it keeps falling off. And the light will just go out sometimes.

The wrist loop is very comfortable. It is well made and should last us a while. And, the yellow collar we bought to match looks great on our big black dog!

I have a 100lbs German Shepherd dog and purchased this leash (along with matching collar and harness) and I am pretty happy with it, it is beautiful yellow color, somewhat soft yet very strong material; looks like it's impossible to break. The padding at the end of the leash is very comfortable on my hands. Shipping was on time, overall I am satisfied, I would recommend this leash to anyone who cares for large dog(s).

The lead is durable, colour hasn't faded and the clasp is strong, looks great too. My only suggestion is that the handle needs to be stronger as it is a large dog lead and the length is too long I know it's adjustable but when there is a 60kg dog on the end u can't adjust much.

Tripe Dog Treat Roll - K9 Magic

My husky puppy loves this stuff. It's easy to cut into tiny cubes for training and is higher value than his regular food and many other treats. It also lasts a long time as long as you don't cut up too much at once and keep it in the fridge. I did have a baggie of cut pieces get moldy, but the solid hunk still in the fridge is fine. Definitely recommended for training!

The rope attached to the toy lasted about 1 hour, but the toy itself was good. I replaced it with some strong cord and it's holding up well. The rubber is soft but strong, I don't see it being destroyed any time soon. There is a small crevice in the bottom of the toy that you can fill with your dog's favorite treat or even bird feathers to give it a smell.

I was hesitant to get this collar. It looks scary and I was afraid it would hurt my dog. It was my last resort for her "leash aggression". After just two walks, she is like a different dog! I even bought a smaller one for my other dog who was pulling. She responded immediately. Now both dogs walk perfect! I wish I had bought this a long time ago. Don't let the looks of it frighten you. Your dog will get the message right away that you mean business. I am getting another dog and will start his training on this collar (the breeder uses it too).

we adopted a basset who was completely out of control on leash and out for walks. Lunging uncontrollably at people and dogs she went by for attention, we couldn't even get a block away without her going crazy.

I ordered this collar and now 2 days later I took her to my daughter's bus stop and she sat at my side didn't lunge or try to drag me towards the kids so she could jump all over them. I've only done maybe 3 small corrections and then she gets praise for being a good girl.

our hopes are to get her to act this well on a standard buckle collar in time but this is definetely a life saver for her! And she is happy to wear it never seems to be in pain and we've had it properly fitted by our trainer before using it. I do not believe these are bad collars when used properly and this is he best brand on the market. They do not instill pain me and my husband both tried it and gave ourselves a much harder correction than given to the dog.

I was not a fan of these types of collars before talking to a trainer about this specific brand. It's sturdy, it works, and the ends of the 'teeth' are flat so they don't remotely come close to piercing the skin on the dog's neck. Works well and is easy to adjust.

I was at a loss w/leash training my wild pup. So, after hearing the Herm collars were the best, I decided to get one for my 9-mo-old 30-lb dingo mutt. The sizing was a bit tricky for me, i removed two links & it still seems effective. She's growing, so overall it's a good choice. She's a sturdy pup & pretty nuts on our walks. I tried loose-leash training w/a regular collar & also a harness, both just ended in frustration for both of us. This is a dog w/an endless supply of puppy energy, usually we walk 3mi+ daily--even in the heat, her squirrel reserve light is always on, & she will lunge at every bird/squirrel/dog etc we pass. On the prong collar, she's doing better. The first time i just led her in the house so she could get used to it. The next day we just did a half block outside, & she did yelp when she lunged at a squirrel, seemed really confused, looked at me accusingly. I did the short quick tug when she started getting a lil ahead, she responded. She's not a dumb dog, but, it's a new experience for sure. I guess the key is to stay in charge, don't feel too bad, if you're using the collar correctly it won't really hurt them, tho when they lunge I imagine it's not pleasant of course, which is the point. It helps to find more usage instructions online--the collar did not come w/any tips.

After several weeks, she's definitely fine w/me putting it on every time, ecstatic we're headed on a walk. I always take her regular collar w/me in case I need it for some reason, but haven't so far. Only issues: It's probably not as effective if you remove 1 or 2 links (she'll grow into it, tho); that said, she will sometimes slowly puuuulll towards something (through the pinch!) & I have to tug a few times to correct her; &, I'm not sure how long I'll need to use the collar b4 she will heel, etc., w/out the prong collar. Regardless, the collar for us has totally been worth the price & made a GIGANTIC difference in the quality of our outings. It's all about focus for us both, every time. I don't talk on the cellphone or daydream, & I use structure & stop occasionaly for "sit" or other lil exercises, & she knows I'm in charge & honestly seems much more relaxed on our walks! :)

When I got this I was very excited because not only did the product was shipped extremely fast but also because my 2 year old Siberian Husky just couldn't stand staying at home all the time anymore. He was destroying my house by running around and bumping into stuff. He literally howl at me and dash to the door every 5 minutes (his way of telling me he wants a walk. I know, I fail at being alpha to him). I had to remove 3 links because my dog neck is very small, however, my dog strength can rip through any weak chains so I had to purchase this size. I saved the 3 links for future accidents or something. The quality is very high so I might not even need it. After I re-size the collar I quickly put it on him. As soon as I snap the links together, he gives me a weird look. Then when I try taking him out side, he bolts out the front door and give me another weird look. At that moment on, I thought I was walking with a different dog. He stay right by my side. I only had to give him a few minor corrections and he goes straight back. I was afraid the links might become unhooked so I solved the problem by tying 2 leash together, one hook is longer than the other; I hook the shorter one to the prong collar and the longer one to the normal collar. That way, when I need to give corrections, I would be giving the corrections through the prong collar and not his normal collar.

PS. Before I put this collar on my dog, I actually tried it on myself just to be on the safe side for my dog (I didn't just try it on my arm, I tried it on my neck). I felt much better about putting the collar on him. Despite the look, it actually feels better than the choke collar (that thing should be banned).

I foster dogs for an animal rescue, and because I don't have dogs of my own yet, I tend to take the dogs that don't get along with other animals.
