I have a Black Lab Mix, who is black from tip to toe. As the days got shorter, it dawned on me that I need to keep him safe and visible!

I looked around at a lot of collar options, many of which were similar to glow-sticks. I wanted something that would last us many years, and since this has a replaceable battery I see that happening.

Getting the collar on him is a snap, literally. It's just a regular snap collar. I love that there are several options of the light, including just staying on. I love this collar, and have already recommended it to several friends. Let's just hope it stands the test of time :)

UPDATE! I've bought 4 of these, 2 were red, 2 were blue. 1 red one broke within 6 months, and now a blue one has broken in 4 months. The red one stopped working completely (changed the batteries and everything) and the blue one has 1 working light and the rest are completely dead. At first if I twisted the blue collar I could get the other lights to briefly work but then they would go out again. This indicates to me very cheap wiring. I already knew it was of cheap construction at the battery casing, but now with the light issue I know the wiring is really poor. The sad part is I only used these on walks and never attached a leash to them. So for the wiring to become disconnected or severed just from my dogs walking around in them really indicates very poor quality. I would not recommend this product at all anymore. I've changed my rating to 1 start because of that.

It's very bright and seems to be of pretty sturdy construction (metal clip). Its a bit hard to press down and activate, but I like that because that way my dogs wont deactivate them by running around. I've had them for about a month, and so far a very solid product. I'm thinking about buy 4 more and attaching them at 3 points evenly along a collar. That way they're lite up from all angles. Its probably over kill, as 1 really does the job....but its just something I'm thinking about.

This is the 2nd LED dog collar I've bought in the last year and I am quite pleased with the blue version. The first one I purchased was the red version of this collar. I really prefer the blue to the red, as its MUCH brighter. Having 2 golden retrievers their fur has a way of obscuring the lights. With the blue version the light has no trouble being seen, even through the fur. I found the red ones to not quite get the job done because of the fur issue, thus that's why I bought the blue version. Even without putting either collar on my dogs the blue version is still much brighter than the red.

I walk both my goldens on a trail along a local bayou at 5am, way before the sun comes up. These suckers really help me see where my dogs are while off lease (no worries, no roads or cars anywhere nearby).

Only 2 negative things I will say about them is they really go through their batteries at a decent rate (usually last around 3 maybe 4 weeks 1/2 hour walk every day) and the battery casing is made out of cheaper plastic. I highly recommend buying the 'Bluecell 25 pack of the CR2025 lithium button cell battery' sold on amazon (buying these type of batteries in stores is MUCH more expensive!!). Its a pretty easy deal to change the batteries out...you just need a small phillips head screwdriver (the size that you would use to work on the inside of a computer) to remove the screw from the plastic casing and then put in 2 new batteries. I use the screwdriver to push out the old ones and slide the new ones in place. Just be careful with the plastic casing when you're putting it back together. As I mentioned its pretty cheap plastic and can break if you manhandle it...plus the wiring seems delicate as well. The hinge that keeps it together at one end is a plastic bar that fits into a plastic fitting, so if you don't have it set correctly when you screw it back together you can break the bar. Its really not a big deal at all if you just take your time and be careful with it.

I only use this collar as a light device, not a primary collar, so I don't attach leashes to it. I still leave my dogs other collars on and attach the leash to that. I don't want to risk the chance of putting additional pressure on the collar with having a leash attached and my dogs pulling on it (usually only when they see a cat or squirrel). I'm not saying you couldn't, I just haven't tried to because I want these suckers to last and the only reason I have them is for a light device.

UPDATE! For whatever reason these blue LED collars batteries last WAY longer than the red LED collars. I have no idea if they started putting in better batteries from the start or what. But I've been using them daily now for just over 3 months and haven't had to replace the batteries yet. I probably will later this week as it seems like they're slightly less bright then when I started. But still, its a HUGE improvement over the red LED collars I had before.

This collar was awesome when I took it out of the package and put it on my dogs. It is bright, colorful, LED, and has three light settings. I was so excited (being a sucker for flashing lights). However, the on/off button was poorly located. Everytime my dogs scratched, layed down, played, etc... they would turn the collars on themselves. The batteries lasted almost a whole week. Ok I understand that when you leave something on, the batteries run dead. So I gave the collars the benefit of the doubt, and bought new batteries. Each collar takes two batteries at $1.50 a battery. I replaced the batteries and much to my complete disappointment, one collar had only one LED work on it. The other collar didn't work at all. My inspection of the collars concluded that with all of the playing, scratching, etc... the battery compartment was easily compromised, being made of thin plastic. This more than likely allowed water/dirt inside the battery compartment, shorting out the electrical wiring. Will not buy another one. This is a cheap, cheap, cheap collar until they relocate the battery compartment (on/off button), and make it out of something a little more durable than thin plastic.

I didn't get this for it's Frizbee effect. I knew it wouldn't fly well, and it doesn't. But, it's fun for short throws that allow it to be grabbed and flung, side to side, or tossed and caught. Nice squeaker also.

Midwest Black E-Coat Exercise Pen

We have a young, 15 lb. Doxie/Jackie mix who has a LOT of energy. We bought this pen primarily so we could use it as a barrier between rooms, and it works great for that. We use one of the end sections as a "door" for us (and him) that we set against the wall when we want to close off the room; we stretch three of the adjoining sections in short "V"s for the length of the room opening; and then we "fold" the remaining partitions together and set them against the opposite wall. It is completely free standing this way, which means it doesn't rub against the walls (unless our dog jumps against it, which he has been known to do--but it doesn't fall over when does this because of how it's propped against the wall, and that's important). We've also used it as a pen, and it worked great for that too. We wondered if our little guy would be able to knock it over when it was in its pen shape, but if he tried, it didn't come down. We left him in it while we ran errands for a couple of hours, and when we came back, it was exactly as we'd left it. He's pretty well potty trained at this point, but we also wondered if we left him in the pen (rather than his kennel) while we were gone if he'd break protocol and do his business in there since he has a lot more room in the pen than he does in his kennel. But he didn't make any messes at all; so I would recommend it for dogs who are at or near the end of their potty training but still need to be confined while their owners are gone for a short period of time. A final word (no, really, I swear): We really like the black coating. Some friends of ours have a gold pen they offered to loan us, but we don't like the way the gold one looks. The black is more "stylish" (which, let's face it, does matter to some of us), and if the pen winds up rubbing against a wall, the black rubs off a little bit (which is quickly and easily cleaned off) but doesn't harm the wall. (Our friends' gold pen rubbed against one of their walls and left scratches on it.)

The Midwest Exercise Pen is a helpful device for pet containment and it has come in very handy for my household. This exercise pen offers a safe refuge for pets and it is metal in construction, adding extra strength and durability. After my previous plastic pen collapsed one day and broke into pieces, I decided to go for something more durable and my search led me to the Midwest Exercise Pen.

The Midwest Exercise Pen provides about sixteen square feet of space and while this isn't much, it does come in handy for a small to medium size pet. This area can be expanded slightly by attaching the open ends of this pen to the opening of a dog crate. I have a metal dog crate and this combination seems to work very well. Not only does it expand the total square footage, but many dogs also appreciate the attached crate because they can crawl inside it when they like, similar to what they do in a doghouse. Besides the play area, the walls of the pen are tall enough to keep pets contained. Panels are sold in varying heights that range up to fortyeight inches. From my experience, I have found that most dogs will stay inside the panels without any need for supervision. Many dogseven smaller breedscould easily jump these walls but they tend to stay confined without any problem.

I like the Midwest Exercise Pen but I have noticed a few potential problems that should be pointed out to any potential buyers. First, I don't like that there are only four snaps included. These snaps are intended to attach the open ends together and to prevent the exercise pen from being moved around and losing its intended shape. However, the snaps are not very secure and since you need two of them to close the openended panels, you will have only two left, and this means the pen will not be as stable as some pet owners would prefer.

Another area of concern with the Midwest Exercise Pen is the lightweight construction. As I have said, the pen is made from metal but the metal spokes are not very thick. This results in an exercise pen that is very lightweight and thus is not suitable for a larger, more active breed of dog. A large or medium size dog with lots of energy could easily knock this pen over, with the right effort. The ground stakes help to prevent this problem, but if the pen is used indoors or in a garage or basement, you obviously cannot use the ground stakes and you will have to tolerate a little bit of sliding around.

The Midwest Exercise Pen is a very good exercise pen for small to medium size dogs, rabbits, and other pets and I am glad I made the purchase. It isn't perfect and it isn't suitable for every type of dog, due to its limited weight and stability. But this is still a very good exercise pen that lets pets enjoy a little freedom while also keeping them under control.

We love this pen. It is large enough for the puppy and for an adult or child to sit in and play with the dog. When opened up it spans a very large entry to the great room in our home giving us the ability to confine her to an area of the house. It is strong and sturdy and although she is a puppy I can imagine her using it even as a 30lb adult dog. For larger dogs, I definitly would consider buying the taller 30" or more. This pen is extremely well priced and after shopping around at local pet stores this one was positively the best deal ever.

This is a very basic ex-pen, in spite of its coating. Having owned several brands, I find that Midwest's tend to rust the most and the earliest. The 42" height is useful for the toys and small terriers (as long as you don't have a climber!), giving enough height security while taking the edge off the weight versus a 48" pen. These pens aren't light! I wouldn't personally use a lower pen for any breed.

Toss the ground stakes, which you'll probably never use anyway, and toss any cheap snap hooks that may be included to close the pen. You'll want to buy some good-sized, solid brass snap hooks, which are a lot easier to use and won't rust. I recommend getting them at least 3" long.

If you can wait, you can find a better ex-pen at almost any decent-sized dog show (or this one, for less money).

This is the perfect size for our 4 lb Yorkie. It would be VERY nice if the description stated that it is NOT to be used for puppies over 9 months old which the packaging clearly states. Our boy is not too rough of a chewer so I'm not worried since you cannot even see a dent in it after a whole month of his tiny teeth carrying it around and trying to abuse it. This should however be changed in the description!! I do wish that we could pick the color since we were sent a pink one but that is okay I guess (he sure doesn't care). FYI you can barely fit any treats in this thing because of the size but if you are filling with peanut butter it works (we like to freeze the PB overnight and then give it to him).

Guardian Martingale Pet Collar - Black

This doesn't look like the exact collar I have (mine has a metal adjustment mechanism) but in general I can't recommend martingale collars highly enough. My dog walks very nicely on the leash but is sometimes fearful, so I wanted to keep her from slipping out of her collar in a scary situation without risking a correction that would be too harsh for her by using a choke or pinch collar. The collar is loose and comfortable as long as the dog isn't pulling, and when they do pull it tightens up enough to hold the head firmly in the collar but (if you've adjusted it correctly) not enough to choke them. When the dog stops pulling, the collar loosens immediately.

I have also seen this used on dogs with sensitive skin who are irritated by choke and pinch collars.

I bought my collar for an obedience class that required a "training" collar and was unsure whether this qualified. For anyone who's here for the same reason: yes, this is a training collar and should be acceptable for your class.

Well-made martingale color, with chain so moving part does not wear out. The nylon is very tough, and can be washed (by hand, of course) with detergent. These collars prevent slip out of head while walking, but should never be used for tie-out or as a permanent collar (choking/hanging danger). I have a 15 year old cat who is getting less than accurate in his litter box finding ability (he's also blind). Rather than curse him several times a day for peeing on my 100 year old pine floors, I decided to try these diapers. I have to say that in my case these were just the perfect solution! Since I bought them recently, I don't know what the issue with the tabs was, but they work just fine these days.

Here's the background...

I have a 19 year old kitty who is the love of my life (I know, can you say "cat lady?") and he recently became completely blind. :( While he doesn't suffer from incontinence, the place is relatively large and he often can't find his way to the box. So, after going around in circles or zigzagging the room for a while, he will finally just pee.

After the second time I saw this happen, I decided that I needed to try something quickly. I had originally purchased these about 9 months ago, for a diabetic cat I had who passed on last year. That cat wouldn't let me even try to get the diapers on him. He would fight and scream, you would think I was trying to kill him! But my little angel (I know, more cat lady talk...), being the adorable creature he is, lets me put these on him and it's been just wonderful.

He still circles the room a few times because I just can't convince him that it's ok to do it wherever he is, but he has been using diapers 24/7 and they work great. I usually change him a couple of times a day or so, one pack with 12 lasts about a week. The only thing is that it can be a little messy sometimes when solid things aren't quite as solid as they should be (if you get what I mean...), but I use these combined with pet wipes (that will become baby wipes once I finish the pack I am currently using, since he no longer grooms himself and I know he won't lick the chemicals) and it works just fine.

So, if you have a kitty and wonder if these would work, my certified cat lady opinion is that you'll be fine with these if your kitty allows you to put them on and doesn't remove them. I'd say an old cat who no longer grooms him/herself would probably be fine with it.

By the way, my kitty is very skinny due to his age, and he was a pretty normal average size for a cat (remember the cat in Pet Cemetary? That's what he looks like). If your cat is larger, you should definitely get a larger size or two. I haven't seen the small diapers, but from the size of the medium ones, I would think they are very, very tiny.

Before we found this product, we had a big mess on our hands, and all over the carpet. My husband was shampooing the carpet so much that the motor burned out on our machine. It's just as good as any name brand crate. It sets up easily, and 3 doors you usually pay extra for. Great price at 37.99... after shipping you still make out better than purchasing it at a large chain pet store.

I bought this crate because of its price. You get what you pay for. although it seems well made and roomy. The fasteners to shut the crate are hard to open and close on some of the crates and easy on others. One came inside out and unable to assemble. Although I notified the seller, cavalier something or other, and requested a return lable, I have not received it within the 30 days time to return it. Would I order these again, no. I bought some from Mutt-mart this summer for $10. less and wish I had ordered more. they are a little smaller, however easy to open and close the doors.

The item arrived broken, with no visible damage to the box, so it wasn't from shipping. The welding was snapped off along the edge of an entire side panel. I should have realized the price was too good to be true. Will not be purchasing an item by this brand again.

I have only had my kennel for a few months and it's already falling apart. Two of the bars have fallen completely off and now the entire door is coming off. I did purchase two of them and so far the other kennel is holding it's own but I would not recommend this kennel for active or young breeds as they may be able to break their way out and destroy your home! "Precision" and "Life Stages" make very sturdy and long lasting kennels.

We got this for our small beagle and only after a week or so she was able to literally bend and break two of the bars where they were welded and attached to the bottom of the crate. She was not actually able to escape but now I had two of the bars unattached at the one end which really posed a problem to poke her in the eye or something. I was unimpressed with the quality of the product if a small beagle could break it. I ended up getting a different crate for her. The only thing good I can say about this is that it folds up small and it is easy to collapse.

I purchased this product, two, actually, as a training leash for my nine month old Rottweiler.....due to it's being advertised as soft, supple leather (NOT AT ALL SOFT) and having had a soft, wide handle. No handle, just an unfinished end. For $38.00, I would have expected to receive the soft Italian leather product, not this poor excuse. I am returning both of them.

A lead without a handle is useful to allow your dog to drag it behind inside so you can quickly grab and correct misbehavior. A looped handle can easily catch onn items and corners and endanger the animal.

The leather is soft and surprisingly colorfast.

My concern? Why the 280% increase in price in the last 6 weeks?

We have two 8 y/o cats who have roamed free since they were young. But after several near-misses with cars, all-night stop-outs, and expensive vet bills from altercations with other cats, I reluctantly decided the fence was the only option. We were the laughing stock of the street and even the vetinary office who vowed it would never work, BUT IT DOES. The biggest issue was with training the manual advises a leash or a tie-out so that if the cat jumps when "corrected", he stays on the right side of the fence. But most non-Siamese cats will not walk on a leash, and we found they wouldn't walk on a tie-out either. Eventually we put the collars on them and supervised them extremely closely, retrieving them from the other side of the fence every so often. Occasionally after an escape we had to turn the system off to allow them back in without being corrected. It took about three weeks of 2-3 hours a day and was admitedly intensive from both a time and emotional standpoint I hated putting my cats through it and they got very down about it in the heat of the training. But gradually we began leaving them unsupervised for longer and longer, and now they remain within the boundaries of the property, even after dark. It is such a relief to be able to let them out and not worry about where they are. If you don't have the time or the patience for constant supervision during training, an alternative option is to first purchase an indoor system, such as the PetSafe Pawz Away Instant Pet Barrier. Since he had always been the more reliable of the two cats, we ultimately decided to take him off the system and allow him to roam free again. Meanwhile, our other cat (with many more years of domestication in his ancestry) remains contained and we've seen no changes in his personality or demeanor.

We've had our fence about 5 months now. When it first arrived and I read the instruction manual I was like-----what??!!! I didn't receive the impression from the description of the product that I had to "train my cat" for three to four weeks in order to use this product--hence four stars rather than five. I didn't bother with their recommended training--this is how the story goes......

Cat was not quite six months old--as product recommends, but close enough. We live in the country surrounded by woods and have a fenced in front yard with a cat door to allow the cat to come and go as she pleases. However, we wanted her to stay in the fenced in yard as foxes are frequently spotted in the trees surrounding us. Originally she began escaping the yard by squeezing through gaps, rather than climbing the fence. Therefore, we strung the boundary wire about six inches below the TOP of the fence everywhere except the spots she had been squeezing through.

On the spots where the cat had been squeezing through we strung the boundary wire along the fence just six inches above the ground. Doing that allowed the cat to go right up to the fence everywhere except the spots she had been escaping. Those spots where the wire was close to the ground she could not walk up to anymore without the warning sound going off followed by the mild shock. This worked well for a few weeks but then she figured out a way around it.

She got out three times before I saw how she was doing it. I then did two things--first I adjusted the boundary wire to stop her from getting out that way--then I "took away the warning" that allowed her to "test the boundaries." Cats are smart--and that warning beep allows stubborn cats to figure out how to get out. I made it so that the warning and the beep were so close together the cat didn't have a chance to back off before getting zapped. Once she stopped receiving a "warning" she decided it wasn't worth the zap and stopped trying to get out.

Oh, regarding the batteries that Petsafe wants ten bucks for: When the battery got low and needed replacing I disconnected the battery from the permanent casing holding it and simply bought a regular CR1/3 battery for three bucks. And just in case doing this made the collar less waterproof I simply take the collar off the cat when rain is forecasted. (for instructions on how to disconnect the battery just do an amazon product search for petsafe batteries.)

I bought the In-Ground cat fence for my cat and an extra dog receiver collar for my dog. The system works great. My only caution it that the cat collar has a 1/3 range of the dog collar (I called Petsafe today to see if my collar was defective or if that was how it really does work.) So I had to switch my cat collar to my dog and the dog collar to the cat. The cat would just run though or jump over the 1 foot boundary with the cat collar. While the dog collar has something more like 8 feet of boundary. I would have been better off buying the regular dog fence system and an extra dog collar instead of getting the cat system. Would have spent less money and then at least their boundaries would have been the same. And the lady I talked to said that the small dog collar works the same as the cat collar, at about a 1/3 of the range of the other collars.

I hope this helps someone else before they purchase the system.

I bought this fence after we spent a whole weekend and over $1000 putting in a chain link fence to keep my daughters cat safely in our yard when not so much as a week went by she was climbing the fence even after being declawed. So I ordered this fence and got it the next day, then I decided to return it unopened because after reading how you must train your cat I thought uggh this will never work. Then after I printed my return label I thought what the heck, if it zaps her as she comes close to the fence she will never go ahead and climb it, so the next day bright and early I ran the cable along the new chain link fence, hooked it all up and put on the collar, thats it. At first she acted like it weighed a ton and her head drooped to the ground, after about 15 minutes she was fine, and she is a small built cat, We went on out to the yard and within 15 minutes she approached the fence and what do you know, it must have zapped her ( on the level 2) because she jumped up in the air and ran to the deck. After this she made a few more trips to the fence but it gets her every time and she has not once gotten out. If this changes in the future I will do a new review but so far if you have an existing fence, this is a great and easy way to stop your cat from climbing it.

First: great idea, we use it to keep one of our cats OUT of the main living area in the house (he has issues ...), so he is outside with his collar and we installed the "zapper" at the second cat-door.

Training:

We could NOT train him, because he simply refused to walk on the leash, he just threw himself to the ground and was miserable (typical for cats). So, finally, after 4 weeks, we decided just to let him run with his collar and the zapper on (lowest zap!), and, he never came through the second cat door, but is a happy cat outside and in some rooms of the house ... we would never have been able to train him if we had installed it as a containing fence, he would never ever have walked on the leash. Our other cats when we tried it did the same: miserable huddles on the ground, no way they could be trained.

the collar:

our cat accepted the collar better than expected, just now and then he scratches his neck a bit where the collar is. And, after only about 10 days I can already see that the collar is starting to get lots of lose ends ... looks shaggy .. it is definitely not made for an animal that may now and then scratch his neck and hit the collar with his claws ... poor poor quality

so, overall, the system helped us to solve our problem, but I have to figure out something about the collar.

This tween size is hard to find. It is perfect for golden retrievers. does what it is supposed to. If my 70lb dog wants to go in one direction, I can move hime into another. Easy to put on and take off.

It does exactly what it's supposed to do, and better than any other one I've ever used. I actually use it 2 ways. If I really need her to heel, like near the street, I use it like it's supposed to be worn, attaching in the front. If we're out in the woods and I want to give her a little more leeway, I actually connect it from behind, like a more traditional harness.

My only issue is that based on the recommendations, I bought solely based on girth. My problem was that even though it fit around her trunk, it was too small to fit behind her front legs the way the guide recommends. I went the next step up and even though I had to tighten the chest straps almost all the way, it fit her a lot better. Since it didn't fit as advertised, it "didn't meet the description" as Amazon calls it, I was able to get a full refund and get the larger size.

If they get excited about something on our walk and want to go after it, they can use their full strength to do so. Not good! I would not recommend the easy walk harness, unless it's for a smaller dog. I do love the gentle leader...much more effective for us!

This is a nice harness and the concept is good, but it didn't work for my golden puppy. She's a puller and while this did pull her to the side as described, it also got her tangled up in her leash too much. Seems like it would work best for a dog that refuses to walk, rather than a dog that pulls.

It takes some time and patience to get this harness adjusted jusst right, with multiple fittings; but it is well worth the effort and the process is only necessary once, unless the size of the dog changes. My dog, a very energetic Lab/Australian Shepherd mix, is young and tends to be easily distracted. She actually walks very nicely on a leash now, most of the time, but squirrels, kids, other dogs, etc., are sometimes too interesting. I received the harness in perfect condition less than a week after ordering it.
