Coastal Pet R1574 G AST00 Silent Whistle

Bought this model Remington dog whistle on Ebay a few weeks ago and, in a very short time, the dogs respond very quickly when using it. Don't expect a dog to know what to make of this whistle until you employ three necessary components to properly introduce the whistle to your dog.

The three componets:

1) Remington dog whistle

2) An obvious association of the whistle with a reward for the dog

3) A pork roast (or some equivalent)

I just blew the whistle in the presence of the dogs and immediately feed them small slices of cheese or cooked pork. Once, I blew the whistle in the morning as I was handing out the dog bowls in the kitchen. This association with food was not done quickly over a few days, but done randomly over about 10 days, with no demand that the dogs respond to the whistle or any early attempts to see if it yet would cause the dogs to come running over from afar. I just tried to tie the sound to food without expectations.

Today, I blew the whistle from the deck when the dogs were preoccupied digging up an ant hill in the back yard and their response was immediate--they came running--all three of the 6 to 8 month old dogs. Later, when I was inside watching TV, the dogs were out in the back yard unseen somewhere and I just pulled the whistle from my pocket and blew it while sitting on the couch. I didn't have to count to 5 before all three dogs flew through the dog door and right to me in eager greeting. I bought this whistle in hopes of rounding up the dogs when hiking in the woods, since they thoroughly vanish on me from time to time. Expect this whistle with continued training will serve the purpose of calling them in very well.

Nice, compact little whistle, with a removable hard plastic sheath that covers a frequency adjustment nut. Simple instructions. Have my whistle set to a shrill, mildly audible sound.

I have 4 dogs. I purchased this item to help get the attention of a dog that is hearing impaired. She, nor my other 3 could hear it. I didn't notice anything but a wind noise when blowing in it. I tried it over and over, no response from any of them. Not a single ear raised.

THEN, I read the instructions on the back of the package! DUH! You must tune it yourself. This allowed me to adjust the pitch to my hearing impaired pup!

Haven't used it for training yet, but I can get her attention when she can't see or hear me.

My dog responds very well to this whistle. It has a barely audible tone to the human ear, but Calypso seems to be able to hear even the lightest of whistles. My one and only complaint is that the plastic cover that goes over the tuning knob fits loosely, and the key chain loop is on this cover; I had to secure it with a piece of tape. Otherwise, excellent whistle.

I'm going to write a review that includes a few simple directions on how to use the whistle because I wish someone had done this for me before I bought it so that I wouldn't have to spend so much time on other sites learning how to properly use the whistle.

First, the review: once you figure out how to tune it to your dog's(s') ears, this whistle really works! That said, sometimes it takes me blowing it several times before they respond when they are far away. At times, when they are inside the garage 40 feet away, my dogs don't respond at all (but sometimes they do...not sure why it varies, but it could be due to a number of factors).

How to use this whistle:

When I first got this whistle, I started to wonder whether it worked at all, until I did the following:

1) When you get the Remington dog whistle and you take it out of the box, pull off the plastic cover and have dog treats ready nearby.

2) Try blowing the whistle with your dogs within view and not more than 25 ft. away. It's best if you blow it when they are not focusing you on you. The dog whistle will make passing air/swooshing sound or a somewhat high-pitched whistle sound depending on how far in our out the Tone Adjustment Screw is in the whistle itself (see #3 for more details).

3) Loosen the locking nut ring then screw in (or out) the Tone Adjustment Screw in small steps (half turns) and keep on blowing the whistle in spurts until you see the dogs ears perk up or you see them tilt their head in a manner that is obviously due to the ultrasonic sound the whistle will make (that you won't be able to hear, but your dogs will).

4) Once you get to that sound they respond to, you can call your dogs over with the treat, while you keep blowing the whistle with the command you want to assign for them to "come here." Give them a treat when they come over. (Note: I use two short whistles to make them come to me then a single whistle to make them sit then I give them a treat).

5) While they eat their treats, I like to keep on whistling the "come here" command to get them used to it, at least in the first week or so of my training.

6) Repeat the above 4-5 times a day (and night) for at least a week as you are training your dogs so that they can learn that the whistle sounds means to "come here."

A couple of important notes regarding this whistle: contrary to what others have written, you do not absolutely need three whistles if you have three dogs for them to hear their own specific, individually tuned sound; that said, I've noticed that the smaller dogs I have respond better to the tone I locked onto on my whistle while the larger German Shepard hears the tone, but doesn't respond to it as well (it could just be her personality and stubbornness though).

Lastly, I've noticed that a lot of buyers are complaining that the whistle "doesn't work" or that it's "not silent." Dog whistles are not supposed to be absolutely silent--at very least they make an air "swooshing" sound or at the other end of the spectrum (and when you tune the Adjustment Screw outwardly on this particular whistle) they will emit a high pitched sound that you can hear. I've personally found that my dogs react best--even from far away--to the quiet, swoosh sound that I hear (with the Tone Adjustment Screw nearly all the way inside the whistle part) as they hear the ultrasonic sound that is silent to my ears. I sincerely hope this helps out.

I thought this would be a better choice than it was. The color is good very snappy! But the extendable thing just doesn't work so well when you have it down to the small size it doesn't stay together. It's not that it's broken, it's just that the two sides of the pink section get tangled in my dog! I would have done better if they had just a four foot leash but I liked the color so I thought it would work. It doesn't and it's in the drawer. If you are looking for a five or five and a half or a six foot leash this would probably be perfect. I think this was my problem not the designers/manufacturers.

I'm absolutely in favor of positive training methods and this works to catch the dog's attention without any yelling. My friend used one of these with her dog. After two weeks of consistent use ("No Bark" then activating the trainer), she was about to give up. I have a giant-breed dog who likes to chew and I thought, after reading other reviews, that this large chew would last her a good while. She certainly loved it. Even as big as she is, she had a hard time carrying it around, but it lasted no time. Within less than an hour she's disintegrated an entire head off one end of the femur and was sawing down on the rest of the bone.

Which is fine, I guess. Happy as can be.. but I've had much smaller bones last longer. And bought a whole box of hooves and had ONE last well over a week (the smell was even worse than these bones, though).

So, anyway. Yes, it's a hit.. but the duration is obviously going to depend on the size and determination of your dog (mine's a "soft mouth gripper" herding breed, btw.. not some wolf hound that likes to tear things to pieces for kicks and giggles..)

As for basic facts on the product itself (for those not familiar w/ chew bonesI wasn't until recently): They're greasy-feeling to the touch (you always have to wash your hands after touching them/getting them out of the wrapper for the dog); they smell pretty bad (fantastic to the dog, though); they've been smoked or something so there are baked-on flecks that are going to flake off all over your floors like crispy bits.. the dog will eat most of them, but you'll be sweeping/vacuuming behind him/her for quite some time and once the bone is finally broken down to bits, there will be shards (most often) and small round tiny bits that can be stepped on or hazards for small children (just be aware if you have them) and your vacuum that will have to be picked up by hand before vacuuming. Best for an outside treat (unless you have roaming neighborhood dogs that will steal them like I do.. she has to keep them inside and I just have to clean them up.. and a lot of the reasoning behind getting these things is to keep them from chewing inappropriate things IN the house). So they have their pro's (they WORK, they attract the dog's chewing attention very well) and cons (a freaking smelly mess).. I find it worth it but will find a different product (probably go back to hooves).

The dog loves the bone and won't put it down. The only downside is that it smells really bad. I have yet to see the bone splinter and she has been chewing on it for two weeks.

My AmStaff/GSD mix is an active chewer. I'd rather he chew on things like bones and toys and not my things. So I invested in this bone (oh okay I bought it on a whim, let's be honest). IT IS HUGE. i have a dog that i trained to go potty in the house. these are the best i have ever tried. i'm just sorry that the stores i go to, target, petsmart, walmart don't carry these any more. just in case i have run low. so i'm glad i found them online and at such a greater savings. i wanted to order them in the larger count size, but they were out of them at the time. i hope they have them in stock now. you can even "rub hard" on the pad to wipe up dog dodo. i have rubbed really hard just to see how well they stand up they don't rip or anything. i even spray dog rug cleaner on it to make it cleaner where he goes potty. and the pkg states that it wicks away the pee quickly. and it sure does. and when you open them up you can shake it like a towel to open it up for the floor and not worry it's going to rip or the inner padding shift. the other type of pads if you hold them up to the light, you'll see how sparce the padding is. and any other brand does not hold a candle to this brand's deodorizing quality. try them.

I have a large dog, and these pads don't always contain moisture at the edges. They work fairly well when hit squarely in the center, but required frequent mopping to clean spillovers in the area. I won't buy these pads again.

One of my dogs will not walk on the wet grass outside, so has decided to use the garage. My only hope until solving this issue is putting down pads. The Hartz large size pads have worked better for me than any other I've tried. They are hard to find, so at least now I have a source. The typical "puppy" pads are useless with a medium sized adult dog. I should try for a sponsorship from Hartz!

I've purchased a lot of pads in an attempt to try to find the best. This is by far the worst pad for leaking! Although it says "Guaranteed floor protection and leak-proof disposal" in the description, don't believe it. My dog always goes in the corners of the pads. These pads are unable to contain liquid around the corners/edges. It just leaks right off. So the 12-hour claim might be accurate IF your dog can go right in the center. Also, I don't have a "large" dog. He's only 17 pounds!

I've used this whistle for almost a year with my dog. She ranges far away when we're out hiking, and always hears this whistle and comes right away, and yet it doesn't bother my ears. I had tried different types of regular whistles and, because my hearing is pretty sensitive, they actually made my ears ring when I blew them several times for the dog. The megaphone on this whistle makes it comfortable for me by directing the noise forward. I prefer the orange whistle over the clear, because it seems to have a slightly lower tone. (Though I've met others who prefer the clear.) I discovered it initially when I heard the sound of this whistle across a big field, used by someone trianing their dog. At that time I'd tried many other whistles and thought this one sounded perfect from a distance (loud, but not screeching), so I walked over to the dog handler and asked what whistle it was. You can use a much cheaper whistle (such as the kind that come with a compass and goes on a key chain, which I think has a decent sound) ..but since I use mine quite a bit, it's well worth it to have one that is less annoying to my hearing.

Save your money and buy another whistle.It's very large and claims to save the handlers hearing. When blown there's a vibration that is very annoying to my ears.A child's toy whistle provides better responses from my dogs....

Just received this unit today and haven't had a chance to try it on the dogs yet, but will update this review after I use the unit for training.

This unit arrived very quickly, and works perfectly at a good distance according to the included and my own test lights. The quality of materials isn't quite the same as the 'name brand' unit I purchased last year for 3x the price, of course, but this one works. The high priced one didn't. And I got two decent quality collars.

The unit I purchased last year arrived defective, was replaced, and the replacement unit lasted about 2-3 weeks. Yes, it was constructed of better materials, but that didn't keep it from sitting on the shelf. I was finally told the (rechargeable) battery had gone bad. I didn't buy one.

I've read the other reviews here that battery life is short on these units, but for the price I would have paid to replace the battery in the more expensive unit I purchased an additional 20 batteries for this unit. More than enough for the training I'll be doing.

For basic training under normal conditions, this unit seems to be a very good deal for the price. If you're not a trainer and you'll only be using this to train your household pet(s), there's really no need to go with the much more expensive units. Packaging is great and the unit works, and for this price I could buy one a year and come out farther ahead than I did with the other systems. You don't always get what you pay for.

I'd have to recommend this unit for the casual trainer...

Update:

I've been using these collars for about a month now, and have to say they're as good as I thought when I initially received them. Though the quality of construction isn't quite on par with the much more expensive units, I haven't had any trouble with them on two active outdoor dogs.

They continue to work well, and the 3 level shock range is very adequate. At first I was removing the collar batteries when not in use, till I realized there is an automatic shut-off feature if the collar remains motionless for more than two minutes. I don't understand other complaints about battery life. Though they're not rechargeable the collar batteries do last a good length of time, and they're inexpensive and easy to order.

Basically (and what matters most to me), is that I had nothing but problems with more expensive units but have not had one problem with this item. After a month of regular use I'd still have to recommend this product for the casual trainer...

You cant find the batteries to it in the stores, and they are just way too expensive to order online. Its worth buying a more expensive unit with normal batteries, because the batteries that come with it go dead really really quick. Within a week we had gone through all the batteries that came with it.

This came in a really nice package almost like a gift box. It had extra accessories which I didn't expect and I am sure will be useful (two extra waterproof battery hole covers, two extra electrodes, 6 batteries). The collars are easy to adjust in size and seem to be comfortable. The remote is nice although it has a cheap feel, I have had no problems. The plastic shocker doo-dad is smaller than I expected and has rounded edges so is less bulky than others available and appears more streamlined. The settings are markedly different and while I am still getting the hang of training my younger dog with it, the older dog has pretty much ceased from his habitual barking habit.

The only reason I did not give 5 stars for this product is the batteries only last a few days to a week and it's not like we use it constantly or anything. Good thing these batteries can be purchased cheaply at the dollar store!

Mine went through the first battery in less than a week and then within the second week stopped working. The lights still worked, but they no longer vibrated or shocked. When I tried to exchange them thinking mine was just a lemon (I'd read a couple reviews on here saying that their first set didn't work well, but the company sent them a new one and it was fine) only to find out that I can only receive a refund. Oh well, a refund's better than a poke in the eye. (By the way, I'm guessing it's a manufacturing defect/quality issue because I was only using one of them, the other was still in the box, yet both of them were broken.)

I have a male Siberian Husky pup (8 months) and an older female Cocker (both fixed). I thought this set of collars might help me break them of some annoying behaviors. When I tested them out of the box, both collars gave a fairly mild tingling shock when using the lowest setting but the devices have 3 levels of shock. I tried them on both dogs and,while the cocker seemed to respond slightly to the collar at first, the Husky never did. I started with the lowest shock, then got stronger when he didn't respond until I was always hitting the highest level. He never even noticed the collar... I tried making sure the prongs were in contact with skin, fresh batteries, etc. He never once responded to the collar.

After a couple weeks, I finally took the collars and tried the shock myself. Even with fresh batteries, both collars had totally stopped working. The LEDs would go solid and you could hear something click inside the collar when triggered, but there was no shock even at the highest setting. I had to return the devices.

This is just a superb collar at an excellent price point. For training I will always prefer a martingale collar and haven't worked with a choke collar in tht regard in years. However chokes have their value and these are excellent.

The links are huge 4mm so they look great around my bulldogs necks, they're like line backers we have a six year old and an eleven month old puppy. The collar is well made, the links are beautifully even and well finished. Most important the glide of the mechanism is smooth and effortless and releases immediatley.

As for the color it pops like crazy! it's just gorgeous against Elvis's (the puppy) snow white coat but the 26 inch is a bit to long for him so we'll either remove a few links or wait until he growns into it, which atthis rate shouldn't take long. We ordered another one of these collars in black for our oldest "Harley" and it's equally well made and stunning in every way.

These are wonderfully made collars available in a wide assortment of fun and unique colors. The plating by the way is excellent, no chips, cracks or unfinished links. Just terrific collars at a great price. If you have a Prime membership you'll get free two day shipping to boot!

Nice product but these run small. I recommend buying the next larger size and remove links if needed. It is also important for people to use these collars properly. They should be used as high up on the neck as possible, NOT down where a regular collar would typically sit. This will assure you are not choking your dog or damaging their larynx. It matters how you put them on. If you walk with your dog on your left, hold the collar and attached leash so it makes a letter "P" not a letter "Q" as you face your dog. Putting the collar on properly will insure that it releases and loosens when you ease up. The collars really should not be called "choke" collars. They only choke when misused. A dog should NEVER be tied up to a choke collar, even if you are just going in somewhere for a minute. They should only be used with a leash, and only by people who know how to use them. It should just barely fit over your dogs head without hurting on the way on. If it is too small it will go on but be very hard to take off and may hurt your dog's ears on the way off. Remember this is not a device to help you win a tug of war with your dog. It is a device to alert your dog that you do not like what she is doing or about to do. It should be used with a quick tug and release to the side. It is to interrupt their thought process or fixation. For example as you approach a dog coming towards you and your dog is going into an excited or fixated state, give a quick tug towards you to get have your dog focus on you and not the approaching dog. Or if your dog is constantly dropping her head to sniff at everything, especially food scraps you should give a gentle correction as she BEGINS to drop her head. These are great devices to train dogs to know when it is time to "Walk" and when it is okay to sniff or do their "business."
