We had been using the prong collar for our puppy. Then the vet said that she prefers the "gentle leader". So I looked it up and found the Holt walking collar as an alternative. The strap that goes over the dog's snout has nice padding and a soft fabric which the gentle leader doesn't have.

I did take the advice of another reviewer get yourself ready for the walk first (it's winter, so I'm gearing up with coat, hat, gloves). When you are ready to start walking, put the collar on the dog. My dog did successfully get it off of her face a few times within the first 5-10 minutes of the walk. After that though, it was like we'd been walking with this type of collar for months! She picked it up very quickly. (I had also tightened the part that goes round the snout so it was harder to get off.)

As for performance of the product it's amazing! No pulling or jolting away from the human. This is a much gentler way to control your dog on a walk! We don't hunt, which is what these collars are made for, but we have four big dogs and like to do long forest hikes with them off lead. They're great dogs and stay by our sides most of the time, but once in a while, they get distracted and disappear into the undergrowth to check out a stream. They are well trained and don't chase wildlife and normally are perfect hikers, but they're retrievers and sometimes they can't resist the siren call of a stream. The oldest one has twice gone down steep slopes she wasn't able to get her old hips back up again. She's strong as on ox on a flat trail and can go downhill with the best of them, but she's mostly a front paw drive dog now. The first time she disappeared, one of our other dogs showed us where she went towe couldn't find her on our own. The second time, we got a glimpse of her down the hill and were able to find her ourselves. With these collars, we won't ever be trying to figure out where Kelty decided to check out the stream and hope for a glimpse of her or wait for the other dogs to to take us to her.

The collars aren't cheap, but considering what it costs to keep a dog, it's a good investment. So far they have worked fantastic and we've had fun keeping track of how much further the young dogs walk up and down the trail around us. The collars are waterproof, and even after a long beach romp, there's no leakage. I would imagine they are great for hunters, but they're also good if you have a dog who mistakes itself for Magellan or other any other explorer.

I previously had two dc 30 collars and they worked fine but could not find any more so I ordered the new dc 40 and I have had no problems with it. It works just as well as the dc 30 collars. The only difference is the collar is orange and made of rubber and the old ones are made of nylon. Also the charger is a bit different. I'm not sure which is best both have good points. The nylon seems to be a tougher material where as the rubber one is more flexible and the hunter orange is very easy to see in the woods. I will buy another one when the need arrives. Update: I have had this collar for a year now and have had no problems with it. I hunt a lot and use these collars on every dog. I have 3 dogs and getting another in 2 months. I will be ordering another of these collars since they have proven to be reliable. Also the rubber ones are better since the nylons ones are starting to come apart at the ends. If you have any doubts about this product because of the few bad reviews just notice that they are not amazon verified!

Couldn't ask for a better system. I have used the DC-40 every day since I got it and haven't had a single problem. I'm constantly amazed at how well it works. All my hunting friends want one now. I got an extra collar when I ordered mine because when I go hunting with a friend they are usually the one that can't find their dog or catch it when we do find it. My husband has had three of these Garmin DC-40 tracking collars in the last month and he says they are nothing but junk. Each one started mall functioning in less than a day and he has returned them to the seller each time. The original DC-30 that he bought has been fantastic, but Garmin has stopped making that model. I've put a lot of time and money into finding either a product or a homemade remedy for "the problem." This stuff has really cut down on the consumption of deposits. I do have to treat four dogs to discourage only one of them. This supplement has not yet broken her entirely, but the frequency has really decreased. I have much more to pick up from the yard. We are still in the two-week twice a day treatment (I also feed twice a day so it is easy) so I do not know what will happen if and when I switch to a once a day dose. It does have a strong, pungent odor but I do not find it offensive. Clearly better than poop-breath. Nothing else I have tried works to this degree I'll buy it until the habit is broken or as long I as need it. May have to look into purchasing by the case.

We have only been through one container of SEP, but it seems to be working on my two dogs. If we come home late or leave them alone in their dog run for too long, we'll still see evidence that they have eaten a bit of their poop (guh, so gross!), but it seems that they only eat a little bit of it now -which is way better than it was before when they only left little remnants. It just seems that something about the SEP turns them off the taste (what could possibly taste worse?!?), whereas previously they were really enthusiastic about the poop-eating. Anyway, this is a much better result than previous pills and products that we used to use (including feeding them spinach and pumpkin) -none of which seemed to have an effect. At this point, short of quitting our jobs and staying home with the dogs all day, this is the best we can do to curtail this disgusting habit. We walk them in the morning and again when we get home from work, but during the work day they are pretty much all alone in the run and when they gotta go, they gotta go -and I guess they get bored! :(

Dogit Silent Dog Whistle

The description of this item says that it's a "silent whistle." It fails at both.

(EDIT: The description of the item changed a few weeks after I bought it. It used to call itself a silent whistle, but not any more.)

First of all, in order to make any whistling sound at all, you have to blow very lightly, and the screw has to be more than halfway in. Otherwise the sound is what you get by blowing into a straw. It takes practice to even make a whistling sound from this thing.

Secondly, it is not silent. When a whistling sound is achieved, depending on where the screw is and how you blow, it's about 6-8 kHz, which is well within the limits of normal human hearing (up to 15-20 kHz). There is nothing silent about this.

You're better off buying a high-pitched human whistle. At least it will work.

PS, I used a frequency analyzer and not my ears to determine that this "whistle" sucks.

The Dogit dog training whistle helped me control my two Chihuahua's barking. Everytime they barked, I blew the whistle and they would stop. I guess they didn't like the ultra sonic sound it emitted. At first I didn't get it either. But I learned how to use it and it works. I got this for a dog that liked to escape and play "chase me". I conditioned him to "come" when I blow the whistle three times, and now that he gets it, it works every time. You don't have to blow that hard, they hear it differently than we do, but they hear it. If you go into this thinking that you will blow it and they will do something, you don't know how to train a dog. Associate it with something like a treat, and yes, they will respond to it. I am buying this again because I lost mine, that's how much I depend on it.

My dog didn't need the harness that these were made to go with, so I got him a lightweight vest to attach these to. They're bigger than I thought they would be, which is good, and the writing is very visible. Even better, they come in a pair, so I could attach one to each side of his vest. They have velcro on the back (the rough side), so I attached some of the fuzzy side velcro to his vest. I'm glad they're removable, since he hopefully won't be in training forever. I was thinking I would maybe get something smaller and more colorful once he's a fully trained service dog, but I like these so much I'll probably just get the "Service Dog" ones.

I had in mind that these would be embroidered simply because that is what all of our other patches have been, but the ad clearly says they are nylon so I can't fault them, a simple oversight on my part. As long as you understand the wording and border is printed and not stitched then you'll be satisfied. The quality seems to be fine and they look good. I'll update later if they don't hold up for some reason, but I don't expect that to be an issue.

Garmin Astro 220 Dog Tracking GPS Bundle with DC40 Wireless Transmitter Collar

This astro should be pointed out that its fixed many of the bugs those of us early adopters encountered (like using velcro to attach anything to a dog was mistake 1).

The early versions featured an orange "box" with a non-amplified antenna built into the top of it, plus a li-ion battery. You got a velcro harness to hold it on the dog and keep it pointing skyward. After 2-3 trips the velcro was full of hair and the antennas were being broken by anxious dogs racing through brush.

Garmin re-designed the astro and fortunately for us all we had to do was buy the upgraded collar design. The (now black) collar works the same but features an amplified antenna on top, the electronics box down below where it naturally hangs, and an improved longer antenna with better range (about 25% better in my testing)

From the top of one mountain I can now find my dog 7.48 miles away with almost full signal strength, so this really works. Getting to the dog is another matter.

The collar transmits either every 5, 10, or 30 seconds. 10 is a good value as you get about 2 days of use from the transmitter before the battery dies. 5 seconds will die in under a day (about 18 hours). These settings are made by placing the collar in close proximity to the handheld tracker and uploading them.

Finally for the radio folk the collar transmits on the MURS VHF frequencies at 2 watts digital. The frequencies are 151.82, 151.88, 151.94, 154.57 (old analog radio channel not a good choice) and 154.6 (same as 154.57) [all in MHZ]

The 151 frequencies provide the best range near towns becuase every fast food drive through uses the 154 frequencies to talk around. These correspond to the last 2 sets of 10 channels in the Astro.

If you are wondering how they get 10 channels on one frequency, its simple both the receiver and transmitter have GPS inside, so they know EXACTLY when a second clicks by to a great precision. They then divide a time period (1 second) into 10 parts, each 1/10 of a second long. Channel 23 for example specifies frequency 2 (151.94) and timeslot 3 the 3rd 1/10 of a second after 0.00 seconds. Since the radio and the transmitter both know when the transmission will happen the radio tunes frequency 2 at 0.3 seconds after a second "ticks" to listen for the 1/10 second transmission from the collar.

The only problem with this is you can not put multiple collars next to each other as the receiver needs time to process the data it receives (about another 1/10 second) so if 151.94 is a good channel for you, pick dog numbers of 21, 23, 25, 27, and 29 if you have multiple dogs on one system or are hunting with another astro user. Also, you can't have the radio tune different channels at the same time, so don't pick dog A on channel 14 and dog B on channel 24 because their transmissions will be at the same time on 2 different freqencies.

Keeping those simple rules of separation in mind you can track alot of dogs a long ways with Astro.

I purchased the Astro 220/DC30 in May of 2009 for my Samoyed who if you have ever owned a sled dog (Samoyeds, Huskies, etc), you know all too well their fondness for roaming, chasing, and running all the while forgetting to listen (ignoring is more like it!) for you calling them!

I now feel extremely comfortable when my dog is off leash on hikes, as the Astro 220 does as advertised. I know whether my dog is on the move, treeing some sort of critter, or resting. I also know what direction she is located and approximately how far away she is. It's also come in handy finding my way back to the car a couple of times.

On the occasions that I have had to retrieve her the GPS/compass has been 100% on the mark each time. It saves me a lot of time wandering through the woods aimlessly calling her with that slightly panicked edge to my voice!

So far the collar has withstood several swims, miles of terrain, lots of digging into boroughs, and rough-housing with other dogs.

As someone else mentioned, make sure the units sync up before you release your dog. I sync them off the dog, then put the collar on her. Carry spare AA batteries with you. I get about 24 hours out of a set on the Astro. You don't want to be DOA when you are looking for your pup. The collar however gives me about 15 hours on a recharge with the 5 second refresh.

Aside from all that, if your dog is a hard-running type, you will be amazed at how much ground they can cover in an amazingly short time.

If there was a wish-list for this product I would say some sort of rechargeable battery for the handset would for me make it perfect. A second-tier wish would be to make it slightly smaller.

I am sure I will buy whatever the next-gen of this product is as it can only go from Very Good to Excellent, I think.

Nowadays when you can see your mailbox from space on google earth, basic cell phones have gps and mp3 players and you can buy 16gb usb flash drives for less than the cost of a tank of gas, technology products come with high expectations, especially ones with $500 price tags. The Garmin Astro meets expectations, but stops there rather abruptly. Okay, that may be a bit critical. The technology is pretty amazing. When you first get it out of the box, work through the quick start guide, and put it on your dog, it is impressive. Once our Schipperke, Lucy, was more than about 15 yards away the handheld unit clearly and accurately showed her position on a simple color map and the dog tracker pointed at her approximate location while correctly tracking her distance. My wife walked across our neighborhood with Lucy and from our home, I could easily follow their entire walk(500 yards away). But the glow wore off quickly. When you start to examine the features of the device, you'll realize that there isn't much more too it. Outside of the one (admittedly cool) feature, the GPS is basically a run of the mill GPS from 5 or 10 years ago. The included map shows highways, but not surface roads (it costs another $100 to download detailed maps). It has a compass, a barometric altimeter and some gps games that I'll probably never play. The collar (despite being an improvement from previous versions) is also a bit big and bulky for a small dog, though seeing Lucy run with that antenna sticking up fromm her collar is awful cute. In total, we love being able to let Lucy run free in the forest without those moments of panic when we don't know where she is, so I'm glad I own the Garmin Astro. I was on the fence between 3 and 4 stars and price pushed me to 3. At $500, I'm still not sure it's worth it. Fundamentally, this is a GPS unit that communicates with another GPS unit via radio. I can't see any reason why this shouldn't be half the price. Give it two years and I anticipate that it will be. For now, this appears to be among the best gps dog trackers available, but that it isn't saying very much.

This season we used the Astro 220 with six DC 30 collars for deer and hog hunting for the first time. The astro is a big improvement over radio trackers. We can determine precisely where the dogs are, which direction and how fast they are moving and recover then much more quickly. However,the range is limted. In flat terrain with heavy tree cover we found the maximum range is about one mile with the factory antenna. The unit does retain the dogs last known location so most times you can regain the lost signal by simply moving closer to that point. When I added the Garmin magnetic mount antenna I found the range is about doubled. You can also use your old radio collars as a backup. The two collars do not interfere with each other. We did have problems with the DC30 collars interfering with each other when they are in close proximity but Garmin gave us the solution with their online support. All in all we are pleased with the product and the support so far.

I bought the Astro to use with my pointing dog, primarily for grouse and woodcock. I tried it at home, before an early season trip to North Dakota for sharptails, and it worked like a champ, tracking the dog as my wife walked her around the neighborhood, and beeping to show me the dog was on point when they stopped. But, in North Dakota, it would never tell me the dog was on point, even though she had been for a long time. I took it home, messed with it, and again, had it working at home. Back to ND two weeks later, same thing the dog would be on point but the unit would not pick up the signal. I called Garmin, and the support rep said to change the COM setting to 30 seconds. That didn't make sense to me, but I tried it no difference. I emailed at the same time to Garmin, and got an much better answer back the next day. "Likely the system had become corrupted, and you should perform a hard reset, and download the latest operating system at the same time." The instructions were very clear, and after performing those steps, the unit works like a champ. I used it this last weekend in the north woods of Minnesota, and it signals EVERYTIME the dog goes on point. It works great!!! I may get rid of the beeper collar completely (instead of just using it on point-mode only). I'll keep the bell, so I can track the dog between points. I also bought the Topo map, and that is a great help in the woods know where the hills and potential swamps are, as well as most logging and all county roads. As other reviewers have mentioned, its not a "high end" GPS, and you still have to use a training collar, but it does what it is supposed to do (with the help of support at Garmin). I really like hunting without all the noise of a beeper collar, and I think the dog can hear me much better too. I'm surprised it works as well in the hills and woods as it does, as I have tracked my dog out 250+ yards. One other issue, if you have a small dog like mine (33 lbs.) the unit won't fit well around the neck as the two units (battery/radio and gps) are not flexible and not curved much. It's very uncomforatble for the dog, and kind of heavy. Overall, 8 out of 10.

These Petrainer collars are offered by Esky and Pet-Ed at lower prices. They are not waterproof, not even water resistant, as some sellers claim. Without immersion I had two fail after the dog ran in shallow water at the beach. Otherwise, while they worked the dog responded very well and only needed a vibration or beep to remind him when needed. After the last failure I continued to have him wear the defunct collar, and he still behaved well; well almost. Unless you live in a dry area, don't waste your money.

Someone in the next apartment can't hear the whistle -but someone standing nearby or in my apartment might hear a very high pitched, barely audible whistle. Close enough, in my book.

The whistle is good quality, solid metal. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because the keychain loop is attached to the plastic pull-off cap, not to the whistle itself. So you can't hang the whistle around your neck and just bring it up and give it a tweet; you have to remove the cap first. Although many of the silent dog whistles seem designed like that, it seems to me that the whistle itself could and should have an attachment point.

About that cap. I feel like an idiot saying this, but it took me a good 10 minutes to get the cap off. I spent a while thinking it screwed off, but you just have to give it a very mighty pull. Once the cap is off, you can adjust the tone of the whistle by turning the metal post at the end of the whistle. Then you can tighten the little metal ring to keep the post at that length.

As others have noted, the whistle is not actually silent to humans. To me it doesn't sound very loud, but high-pitched and annoying. I presume it sounds louder to the dog. My dog (German Shepherd cross) sure perks up and comes running for a tasty treat. That's what I wanted, so so far so good. I don't really see how it would stop a dog from barking, though unless maybe from surprise, the first couple times.

If you expect this whistle to be truly silent you will be disappointed. If you believe it's purpose is to stop your neighbors dog from barking or any such nonsense you are sadly mistaken. This is an excellent communication device when used properly. Adjust the length until the pitch gets your dogs attention and then link various patterns of long and or short tweets to known commands. It works great.

Attempting to use this thing for anything else is witchcraft.

What a joke! Do not purchase this item if you are looking for a sturdy fire hydrant for your dog to pee on. Ours is already broken! It was made out of cheap plastic. Don't waste your money.

This item is very nice looking, but it didn't seem to attact my dog. I continually working on his house training, and a small fake bamboo tree worked better than this hydrant. I don't know if I should have worked differently with my dog, but at this time, he is not using it. Good luck.

I ordered a comfort adapter after a few days of using the dogtra IQ e-collar on my 14 lb rat terrier/chihuahua mix and seeing how much the regular prongs poked into her neck when the collar is tight enough not to move around. The collar works just as well with the comfort adapter on and she seems much more comfortable wearing it. So far I have been very pleased with this adapter & the e-collar.

I was worried that this might lesson the "correction: and that I would have to turn up the strength, but that wasn't the case. This seems to be a comfortable fit on my dog, way better that 2 prongs poking him.

I reluctantly bought my 15# terrier a bark collar after we were kicked out of one apartment, allowed to move to a different location in the same complex, and told that if there were any complaints we would have to move out entirely. He doesn't bark that much, but there is nothing to drown out the noise between neighbors. Anyway, I bought the Dogtra 300 and the prongs were huge for such a small dog. I bought the comfort adaptor and feel much better about putting the collar on. A lot of reviews talk about dogs getting sores where the collar lies. I think this adaptor will prevent anything like it. BTW, I tested the collar on myself and there is no way the static stimulation could cause these sores. If your dog yelps, try it on yourself and you will see it just doesn't like being corrected at all. It doesn't hurt at all for the levels I have used on my dog (up to 3).

This product is an excellent addition to the Dogtra IQ. My company utilizes the IQ on a regular basis training professional working dogs and doing human/dog aggressive rehabilitation. The biggest problem we have with the IQ is that the factory-issued contact points rub the hair off our short-haired breeds (Boxers, APBT, hounds) and create contact rashes, even when the strap is properly tightened and the shorter contact points installed. The SD Comfort Adapter installs quickly, easily and actually provides a better, most consistent contact surface. It has six, nubbed contact points arranged in a circle. This not only spreads out the stimulation, it makes it more easily adjustable and suited to more sensitive dogs. It also ensures consistent contact with your dog's neck, even during activity, work or exercise.

This product is almost like the heart of a smoke detector except instead of detecting smoke it goes off when there's pressure on the mat. You can see the 9V in the video and hear the beep is somewhat similar (but monotone). You can also see it takes a little more pressure to set off on a plush cushion but there's no way a pet could lay on it without it going off.

I've also used ours on a deep picture window sill and it keeps the dog from jumping his front feet on that when neighbors are out (german shepherd likes to keep tabs on everyone!)

One of our dogs isn't terribly scared of the sound but doesn't want to set the mat off. The other dog doesn't want to be anywhere near it. Neither dog wants to lay on the couch with this thing on though so it's effective for both.

We should have bought this ages ago.

We finally have a dog who simply refuses to get off the couch and sheds like crazy. Seeing a review at Amazon for the couch off thing with the shocker saying to save your money and be humane and buy this, we opted for this instead.

Right away, he'd leap off the couch, and now, he doesn't even try to get on it anymore. We just need to remove it before company comes! ;)

I have a black cloth couch and a Golden Lab..you know the rest. I tried boxes, she would move them, I tried huge boxes, she would knock them off. I got so tired of having my couch look like I was moving and vacuming off all the dog hair before guest came over. And then enter in

'The Sofa Scram' Thinking Cheap Chinese product, I ordered as a last resort to keeping a nice home.

Two weeks later I am proud to admit not one dog hair on the couch. I was amazed. And please note, my dog lived to be on this couch for some odd reason. So she is on her soft doggie bed, and my couch is dog hair free !

Great product, it works as advertised. You only need to make sure you get a 9 volt battery for it.

I was so frustrated with my bold catnothing deterred him from climbing up on the counters. Once I even found him all curled up in my fruit basket and he just looked at me like, "what..?". I had tried the squirt bottle, the double-stick tape, cookie sheets on the edge(both worked while in place, but makes the counters very inconvenient to use) and even tinfoil (never even phased him) but I didn't want to fork out the money for a CatScram.

I bought the SofaScram on another site which had a special going with a free No Pets Allowed Blanket. This is like a space blanket/tinfoil type material (99 cents at Walmart). As I expected, the No Pets Blanket didn't phase any of my kitties. As the site suggested, I tried associating it with Sofa Scram's obnoxious alarm by hiding the SofaScram underneath the No Pets Blanket. I was proactive in introducing it to them on the counter, on the tableswhere ever I wanted them not to go and now, they avoid the Blanket itself completelyif they even see me coming towards them with it, they clear out in a hurry.

One thing about the SofaScram by itself, when the cat is scrambling to get away, it can get knocked off the counterI was worried about damaging the device. Twice this happened but it's still okay. Very loud, although under the tablecloth it gets muffled a little bit, but it was still annoying enough to make the cat jump offand since its out of sight, the cat will have no idea whether its safe or not and hopefully won't take its chances. It's only been a day, my bold cat is not so bold anymore. But, I do plan to reinforce every once in a while so he won't catch on.

I'm really happy with the SofaScram and relieved that my cats don't like it. Good by itself, but with the space blanket material you can really extend it's effectiveness. If you don't mind shiny stuffit looks better than tinfoilon your counters or table (as a visible deterrent even without the SofaScram in place), you can cut it to size and smooth it down to cling nicely while you continue to use the SofaScram elsewhere.
