So, I have a beagle. She's a perfectly lovely little dog, but can be quite hyper at times. Ok, more than hyper, she can be crazy. Particularly when the rest of the family comes in in the afternoons. She jumps all over them, runs in circles around the house, and takes a good hour or so to return to non-frenzy state. I gave her one of these little calming treats today and voila, no jumping, no running. She was still her normal happy self and has been playing as normal, she just isn't wound quite so tightly after having the treat. She accepted the treat willingly without me having to hide it in anything. (But if I am to be completely honest, she is not the most discriminating eater, so make of that what you will.)

Bought these for my 3 year old, 90lb chocolate lab (field breed, not english breed... aka the super crazy labs). Had to leave her unattended in a friend's house while we went out to a soccer game, and have used them SPARINGLY when we visit friends and she needs to be mellow for a few hours (despite walking her, playing fetch and dog parks, she will still jump around and get into everything).

When she eats them, she tends to be very mellow and more likely to nap than whine, bounce around, or otherwise get into everything. I would give this 5 stars, but I really dislike the idea of medicating a dog for its natural behavior/energy/curiosity on a regular basis. She is a lab they have a ton of energy naturally. Also beware the energy spike when these wear off. Your dog will want extra attention/exercise when these wear off.

But if you need a mellow dog in a pinch (leaving them unattended in a strange place, visiting dog-shy relatives or friends, these will work. Just follow the directions on the bag and don't give them too much.

This is one of four calming products from Pet Naturals with the same dosage ratio of key ingredients per ten pounds of pet weight: only the size of the soft chew varies in three and the fourth is a liquid. ALL WORK BEAUTIFULLY on our four pets and better than the compounded (& expensive) drug amytryptalline (sp?) prescribed by our vet. The liquid may have a convenience advantage, especially for pets whose weight falls in between the listed weight categories. The liquid is more expensive, however, and would have to sell for about $14 to equal the serving cost of the larger chews. Most economical is the product for medium-to-large dogs ($6-$7 for 21 chews) but requires slicing the chews into smaller bits (completely doable, by the way) for pets under about 40 pounds to get portion sizes to match the manufacturer's recommended dosage. I surmise that the manufacturer's recommendation is based on the worst-case scenario (sensitive pet and acute stressful situation). For less taxing situations/pets it would be entirely reasonable to begin with a milder dose (say half or even a fourth) and work up to an effective level. We have four 10-pound pets, two of which have aggression issues: one out of jealousy and the other defensiveness; the third is skittish and over-excitable; the fourth (the mom-cat) is generally cool but gets a little frayed by the others' behaviors. I slice the larger chews into about 20 bits and add a bit to each of the two protagonists' three daily meals. This gives me about 7 dosage-days per cat per chew rather than 4 days at the recommended level.

This smaller dosage regimen seems to work just fine for these behavior issues for these pets. I may try reducing the dosage even further after the two antagonists have achieved a noticeable attitude adjustment. The product does seem to work better on the jealous/aggressive pet better than on the defensive one. I had noticed this same phenomenon with my DIY herb mixtures (chamomile, peppermint, fennel, ginger, etc.). They seemed to have more effect on the pet with genetic/developmental aggression than on the one with learned/protectionist aggression. The Pet Naturals formula, however, works noticeably better on both pets than my homemade concoctions ever did (Well, just as good and it tastes worlds better, say the pets). ONE NEGATIVE: The liquid is 3.8 oz not 4 oz. as advertised. Small but unnecessary discrepancy. MORE POSITIVES: the pets LOVE the product; it is non-addictive; and (naturally!) natural. The only time it is not effective in calming the pets is after they get a good whiff of the stuff and before you can give it to them. During this interval, THEY GO ABSOLUTELY NUTS. And STAY NUTS until the aroma (and product) is out of range of their senses. IRONIC, huh!! According to the people at Pet Naturals the product has no dependency issues and the ingredients are completely "natural". The colostrum is the bovine variety and said to be hormone free. I did not ask (I did not WANT to know) how they harvested this natural colostrum. Also per Pet Naturals, the calming effect takes about 30 minutes to engage and lasts about 4-6 hours. Again, I suspect this is based on the more intense end of the stress/anxiety spectrum. In our case, the "bits" of reduced dosage last from meal to meal, which is at least 8 hours (and sometimes a little longer--I know, the pets think we are irresponsible too!). We have only had one bad fight since starting the regimen about two weeks ago and it was CAUSED BY the product!! (retraction later). We were comparing products with the pets in the same room (same bed!) and our jealous one got a whiff. She got very excited and persisted in pursuing the aroma thru the closed containers. This apparently broke the calming power of her meal "bits" and within a half hour she ambushed her favorite target sibling viciously (well, it sounded vicious). So WE were the CAUSE of this attack, NOT the Pet Naturals. Had we given our keen-sensed one another small "bit" (and put the stuff away quicker) she probably would have settled back down and resumed her repose. CUSTOMER SERVICE at Pet Naturals deserves accolades as well. I spoke to two reps there (one actually in sales) and both were just EXCELLENT; probably the best customer service experience I have had that I can remember (should I mention my memory loss problem?). They actually sounded like they were enjoying helping and they actually did with their knowledge of the product and with actual experience in using the product. For instance, they knew the "user satisfaction" level that the product designers shoot for: namely a minimum of 80% and that their products typically achieve a 90% user (pet) acceptance level. In our case, it is 100% (& possibly 110%). I am also testing the liquid formula as a flavor enhancer for appetite-challenged pets. So far the aroma of the calming liquid (and the "bits") is easily lost when mixed with food (even dry nibbles) or water or chilled. I generally feed our pets dry nibblers floating on about an ounce of water. One of our pets has renal failure and the accompanying diminished appetite. Adding the "bits" or liquid drops to her food does not seem to improve her appetite level. I would have expected a dramatic effect based on how appealing the products are to our pets if fed to them out of hand. I am not through with the "enhancer" experiments yet, so I may add to this review later if I have something new to report. I am also testing other calming alternatives, one in particular from VETS*BEST, and will compare the products when I write a review on this other brand. There are still other brands of calmers out there but, having found some that work for us (and at an affordable serving-cost), I do not plan to check these others out. So if anyone could extend the product comparisons by bringing in others they have used in side-by-side trials with Pet Naturals or Vets*Best it would be immensely helpful to future seekers of pet (and human) calm.

Our small 12 year old Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix gets dog really excited every time we take the 3 hour trip to our vacation home. She starts stressing while we pack the car like she knows where we are going and she doesn't want to be left behind. We go about once a month and she pants almost the entire way, driving me crazy. We have given her these to her 3 times and each time about 10 minutes later she is calm and then goes to sleep for most of the trip. It's great! She is not doped up and likes the taste very much. Dogit Silent Dog Whistle

The description of this item says that it's a "silent whistle." It fails at both.

(EDIT: The description of the item changed a few weeks after I bought it. It used to call itself a silent whistle, but not any more.)

First of all, in order to make any whistling sound at all, you have to blow very lightly, and the screw has to be more than halfway in. Otherwise the sound is what you get by blowing into a straw. It takes practice to even make a whistling sound from this thing.

Secondly, it is not silent. When a whistling sound is achieved, depending on where the screw is and how you blow, it's about 6-8 kHz, which is well within the limits of normal human hearing (up to 15-20 kHz). There is nothing silent about this.

You're better off buying a high-pitched human whistle. At least it will work.

PS, I used a frequency analyzer and not my ears to determine that this "whistle" sucks.

The Dogit dog training whistle helped me control my two Chihuahua's barking. Everytime they barked, I blew the whistle and they would stop. I guess they didn't like the ultra sonic sound it emitted. Every once in a while I have to reinforce their bad barking behavior, but it's getting to the point where I have to do that less and less. Great product for the price.

At first I didn't get it either. But I learned how to use it and it works. I got this for a dog that liked to escape and play "chase me". I conditioned him to "come" when I blow the whistle three times, and now that he gets it, it works every time. You don't have to blow that hard, they hear it differently than we do, but they hear it. If you go into this thinking that you will blow it and they will do something, you don't know how to train a dog. Associate it with something like a treat, and yes, they will respond to it. I am buying this again because I lost mine, that's how much I depend on it.

I have a dachshund and they are difficult to train. Using pad for years and washing the floor from leaks for years. OMG, she never misses on this thing. She gets it and I am using less pads because of it. I'll be getting another as a back-up. I think they are more expensive than they should be however.

If your cats aren't too bright, the mat always has to be in place. I was hoping my cats would learn to avoid certain areas so I can move the mat around, but have unfortunately had to buy an extra one along with an extension.

If you want to keep cats off certain furniture, this is a great product. If you want to train your cats to stay away from a place, it might not work, depending on how smart your cats are.

With my older mat I've noticed that the activity light goes on by itself and the mat shocks the air (I hear the noise) every once in a while when there is nothing on the mat. This wastes the battery (be aware that you have to buy a 9 volt battery separately, as it doesn't come with the product). Despite this, the battery seems to last a long time (almost 6 months).

After buying new leather furniture for our media room and trying mulitple things to keep our dog and cat off the new furniture, I purchased the 48" ScatMat. It worked so well, I purchased the shorter 30" mat for our love seat. Keeps both the dog and cat off the furniture. It has 3 different levels of intensity, which is nice for different size pets. Once the pets learn of the shock, you don't always have to turn them on. I highly recommend this product. Just remember to turn them off and remove them when you have company coming to visit. A couple of our guests have sat down on the mats before we could warn them. Not a big shock, but it got their attention.

I purchased this as a last ditch effort to save my husband's cat from being banished from the house due to urinating on my brand new sofa and chair. The product was actually recommended by the upholstery cleaning company who cleaned said furniture for us. I ordered 2--one 10x16 to go across the back of the sofa and a smaller one to go across the back of the recliner. They arrived fast! They're simple to put together---you just install the battery in the power pack, then snap the power pack onto the mat. Choose your setting from lo to high (I used high!) and the mat is activated. Now, I have not yet seen the cat get zapped, but she must have been because she has gone from lounging all over the furniture like she owns it to making a W I D E circle around the furniture and not even hopping up for a minute. I am finding no cat hair on the furniture, so this is a good indication that she was zapped and has chosen to avoid having that happen again. I call this a successful diversion and would definitely purchase again and would highly recommend this product. As an added bonus I have enjoyed many moments of amusement when my hubby sits down on the sofa and casually tosses his arm across the back. LOL He's been zapped four or five times now and each time the kids and I have laughed so hard we cried. FYI.....the people who declared this a "cruel" way to train an animal are likely to have no experience with this mat, in my opinion. Even on the highest setting it isn't a "painful" shock. It's like the well built up, foot shuffling static shock we all had fun with as kids. It uses a 9v battery, so obviously we aren't talking death chamber electrocution here. It's enough, tho and does work as the manufacturer suggests as a deterrent to keep pets (and some husbands) off of the furniture!

This little mat is fantastic. I don't even have to have it on anymore. My cats see it and know how it feels if they step on it. Anywhere you don't want your cats: sofa, dining room table, kitchen counter, etc., put down the mat and they will stay away. I would definitely recommend this product. Our young cats are awesome, but my boy has "the call of the wild" and wants to run out the door every time he hears it open, which is a nuisance when we are going in and out a lot. We set the scat mat in front of the door, and both stepped on it and got a zap which was enough for them to jump off quickly. After this happened a couple of times, they stay away from the door even if we leave it open. I took a piece of clear vinyl shelf liner and put it by the door instead, and they still stay away, so we were able to move the mat to the back door.

I bought a different type for my smaller dogs and loved it, but they don't make a size to fit larger dogs. This one works similarly in that it is comfortable for the dog and works on the premiss that when a dog's weight is pulled off the front paws s/he is submissive. Works well.

I first used this on my dad's 90 lb ridgeback who I walked with my 85lb dog. Needless to say, if they saw a squirrel I had to run after it as well and it was of course a huge risk if we all had to run in the middle of the road. The dog can still pull with this, but he hasn't been able to have more control than me with this harness. I now use it on a 50+lb hound mix puppy I just rescued. I first used the gentle leader for her since the shelter was using one, but she would spend most of the walk trying to get it off and since she has droopy eyes (a hound) I didn't think it was good for her to be rubbing her paws near her eyes so much since she could get an infection. So I got one of these harnesses for her as well. I find it works just as well as the gentle leaders, but the dogs don't seem to mind having them on as much as those. Keep in mind that they tend to love to chew on the strap on the front if they can get their mouth around it (i.e. in the car etc). Both my dad's dog and her have chewed through them. So keep them supervised if you keep them on when they're not walking for some reason. Also, for my dad's dog the chafing of the straps caused his hair to be shorter in some spots, but I haven't noticed this on my new dog.

Red Dingo Reflective Safety Dog Lead, Large

I love this leash. Admittedly, I've only used about a dozen leashes total throughout my life, but this one is so great, I intend to choose Red Dingo for any future purchases. Originally, we chose this leash because it was reflective, came in purple, and had a matching collar available. However, I love the product for other reasons: the full length of the lead is reflective (many other reflective leashes are only reflective at the dog's end), the quality is exceptional (some other reflective leashes have reflective tape easily separated from the leash), and the padded handle is an absolute pleasure to hold onto. I'm sure no one else's dogs would ever pull and strain on their leashes, but my lovable but undisciplined mutt occasionally does, and the padding and smooth texture of this handle lets it glide around my wrist and hand instead of giving me "rug burns" like all our previous leash handles did. It's a small pleasure in this ugly world, but this leash has made twice daily walks with my dog that much nicer. I'm considering ordering a spare, these are so great. Highest recommendation from a devoted dog walker.

I ordered this leash based on reviews. I wanted a reflective leash that was strong enough for a 70 lb. dog with the pulling strength of an 18 wheeler. This leash exceeds expectations. I was able to shorten it easily and thus have the reflective tape on both sides of the leash. I also love the padded handle, which really helps to protect my hands when my dog pulls. (We plan to go to obedience school soon so that the "pulling" should no longer be an issue.)

I would recommend this leash and if something happened to it, I would reorder it.

Once you test drive one of these leads you will never want for another. The handle has a fantastic padding throughout and covered with a soft fabric. Even with special training/walking collars and harnesses, an 85 pound German Shepherd has incredible strength. A regular nylon leash was rubbing my hands and wrists raw with even the smallest pull. These padded-handle leads are a dream come true. I would be willing to pay three times more for one of these leads and will never go back to a regular one. They are that nice.

Karen Pryor, Getting Started: Clicker Training Kit for Puppys

Before we got our puppy Olive I think I read every puppy / dog training book on the market. The Clicker Puppy DVD is a little amateurish, but despite that, it was probably one of the best things I purchased before we got our puppy. A few five-minute training sessions a day and I had Olive performing sit, down, etc on command days after bringing her home. Also, the DVD shows how to help you teach basic manners easily. Using the clicker is weird at first, but once Olive got it she would quickly start trying things to get the click and the reward. I used pieces of her kibble as a reward when she was a puppy. Using what was shown in the DVD I was able to use the clicker to train all sorts of things based on the confidence of how well the techniques worked. The DVD is the star of this kit, but the rest is good enough. I bought this for myself and later when I found out my Dad was getting a puppy I still ordered the kit instead of just the DVD. I plan on buying this kit for anyone I know who is getting a puppy.

DVD is very basic and not very polished but does provide good starter info. Book a bit higher level. Clicker was defective so e-mailed mfg. and they responded next day back and mailed a new one right out (two in fact great customer service). Amazon's price was best of any seller including mfg.

I liked that this came as a "kit" but in the end you really don't need it all. I liked the DVD the best, it showed you how easy it is for anyone, even a 5-year-old to train a dog. The flash cards are cute but they end up getting stuffed in a drawer. If it is possible just buy the DVD and the clicker (if there is any price difference that is).

Being a complete novice at dog training I was skeptical but with two new Australian Shepherd puppies and unable to afford training classes I was willing to try anything. As advertised the puppies responded within minutes of the first session. Thought I would put it to the real test and try it on my four year old mini daschund. She was a bit more stubborn but still responded in the first session. I liked how the training shown on the DVD was done with completely untrained dogs/puppies and used children as the trainers to show how easy it can be. The product description didn't clearly explain that some of the techniques are much easier with more than one person but so far I'm pleasantly surprised. In one week the puppies have quit jumping on people when they come in, sit on command and are starting to come when called. Hopefully the results in the next few weeks will be equally impressive.

Cadet Training Pads for Dogs, 100 Count

The puppy pads are useful, but I have found another brand was more absorbant, didn't let the pee seep through to the floor like these did. Other than that, our puppies seem to be attracted to them, 8 times out of 10. The price is pretty decent too.

I usually purchase cadet from a local store and they cost slightly more so I thought I'd try these out. These pads were not the same quality as the ones I usually purchase. The others are more absorbent and much thicker and heavier material. These weren't even the size that I expected(they are about an inch smaller than the Cadet brand that I usually purchase). They served the purpose but I was very disappointed in the overall quality of the product.

Reflective Dog Vest Small

I debated on whether I should get the medium for my 30lb Corgi because of his odd body shape and thick coat but the small fit fine. The velcro straps allow for a good range of sizes. I work all shifts so I walk my dog at all hours of the day and night. We both wear reflective vests and it makes a difference. People move over and slow down a good distance away so I know that they see us. The vest seems comfortable and doesn't hinder his movement. Actually, he steps into it on his own because he knows it means a walk. Good product, wish more people would use them. Thanks for providing a product that keeps my friend safe.

Bought this December 2009 and I am still using it January 2013. The velcro is starting to give just a little so it doesn't hold quite as firmly, but it is still going strong even with almost daily use. Especially glad I have it now since I recently moved to Atlanta and have found them to be some of the worst drivers I have encountered yet.

After my first dog was hit by a car in 2006, I began researching safety products for dogs.

My dog was a long haired breed so most light up and reflective collars and collar attachments were unsuitable and really not that visible from very far away.

Then I discovered the VizVest for my second dog (same breed, same long haircoat). She wears the Vizvest for those long walks in the woods during hunting season, any time we walk in a crowd, if we are working in the garden and we need her to be visible to cars that may come down the road, and for simple peace of mind that I never had with my first dog.

This vest has proven to be a lifesaver several times over!

It is very easy to place on the dog, great for keeping belly hair drier and less muddy when it rains, and can also be laundered. Two hook and loop closures make this vest very secure too!

My dog has gone through one vest already, but she wears it at least every day.

I thought about ordering the new mesh one, but since we walk in the woods and brambles, the smoother material doesn't catch quite as easily. For city dwellers, especially in summer, the mesh might be a better option. I also like the bright yellow better than the orange model they have listed for hunting.

Can't say enough good things about this product. Try it out-especially if your dog is prone to suddenly bolting after deer or rabbits and you love hiking. Makes trying to find him or her after dark a snap. There is no excuse for not training your dog, and a rock solid recall is better, but for safety, this beats all--paws down!

Even though my dog is only 13 pounds, the vest closing over the back works just fine for her. I bicycle with her on a slow winding mountain road in pitch black late at night. Sometimes a car comes, so I attached inexpensive red blinking bike lights to the vest to hang down on each side using small gauge vinyl coat spool wire (Radio Shack). Between the lights & the reflector vest, she couldn't be more visible. I'm hoping the coyotes will be intimidated by her flashing lights so she won't look like dinner to them.

This thing is tough, durable, and visable.

I've had one of these for my lab for five years.

DURABILITY. We run through every terrain immaginable from swamps to briar thickets (like 100 yard power line cuts grown over in thick briars ripping at our clothes and his vest) in all weather day and night. I am often bleeding when done. This vest has never got stuck on anything and it has never come off him -I think becuase the velcro is on the top. It has also survived all the nasty stuff my dog has rolled in -from dead animals, mud puddles, and literally any crap he comes across, from horses to human (that was nasty). It is frayed, some reflective material is cut in half, even some of velcro has been ripped by briars. But it is all still together, nothing dangles, it is still brightly reflective, velcro still sticks together tight, and stays firmly on my dog.

REFLECTIVITY. The dog reflects brightly with the dimmest flashlight from any angle except if approaching directly from the rear. Most vests do nothing from the front and need a side view. As long as the dog is angle 15 to 20 degrees it can be seen from the rear/side. Cars always slow down during the day and even more so at nigh b/c I think they are trying to see what the moving bright thing crawling on the ground is.

SIZING. It has always fit my my dog who has grown from 85 to 110 and back down to 95 lbs (got a little tight at about 105). Unfortunately I can't tell you the size becuase though the tag is still on the vest, all the ink has been worn off and it is unreadbale. BUT THE VEST IS STILL BRIGHT. Obviously I am a fan.

About to buy one for my 35 lbs dog but becuase of her shorter fur, at night I'll put it over reflective chest protector from bass pro shop.

So I bought this for my sister's new dog that is under 6 lbs. Surely, the smallest petite size would fit her. She is rather squirmy and legs may be a bit odd so she found her way out. No matter how tight I made it, it just wasn't working. Kind of disappointed, but it isn't the harness that is the problem. This is my back up bone for my chewing fur balls. The tank is the preferred bone, but this is a good alternative. The problems is that the knuckles come off after a chew a thon. They are little bones that they swallow and often end up throwing up..

So, healthy and great, but those little knuckle bones that come off are somewhat a problem.

My dog absolutely loves her Kool Kong and won't leave the house without it. She primarily retrieves it on land so consequently we had to shorten the rope so she would not step on it while running back and tearing the Kong out of her mouth. The Kong holds up well to to her chewing but she tended to chew through the rope right where it enters the Kong until I wrapped the first 8" with some black duct tape. After a time the floatation foam inside starts to breakup and come out but it is easy to replace. The rope makes long and high throws easy and the unpredictable bounce keeps her interest. I bought this one as a backup to her original as Sable would really miss it.

I gave this as a gift to my stepfather to use in his wheelchair. At night he would have to take the arms & seat apart to protect it from the cats. Now, all he has to do is place the mat in the seat. They only bothered it once. I initially anticipated buyIng him the electric pad, but I knew he would forget it was there & fire up his fanny. This was a safer & cheaper alternative.

I use these to keep my cats from sitting on top of my warm water fish tank. They are certainly uncomfortable for any animal to stand or sit on. They do not injure the cat. If my cat cracks the top or falls into my fish tank this would be ugly. They are a training aid, not a one time miracle cure for behavior issues. They can be trimmed to size and are washable. i got this for our "sitting room" so the (3)cats and (1)dog wouldnt get hair all over the sofa. I got this out of the box and touched it it hurt the heck. There was no way i would let an animal jump on this. This is abuse. I returned mine and will never try again. I bought it so my cat would not pick under my bedroom door at 3 a.m. to tell me she's hungry and wants breakfast NOW. Instead of picking under my door, she picked around the mat, which was just as annoying. If I leave my bedroom door open a crack with the mat in front, she just jumps over it and into the room. I think two mats placed side by side across my doorway would work best, but for now I think I'll go back to piling blankets and pillows in front of the door so I don't hear her picking and scratching. I'm sure it will work fine for chairs and counters, but my cat doesn't have that problem. Oh well, live and learn.
