No Bark Dog Collar

We have tried everything with our wonderful dog who never barks.. except when we leave... we started by giving him chew toys, busy bone, ultrasonic bark device, relaxing music for dogs (I kid you not), a dog collar with a citronelle spray, a fermone spray for his bed, and then we got a different electric collar pet safe which ambed up the shocks which worked somewhat but then our dog would howl when we leave.. it does not zap that kind of noise. After using this for a few years and watching our dog howl more and more when we leave... after another set of batteries ran out... we bought this one and oh my god it actually works. I think it' the vibration warning a zap is coming which makes it such a success... as it's a one two punch we needed to calm our dog down. For those of you who think this a bad for you dog... NO.. what is bad for your dog is straining his vocal cords all day and our neighbors nerves. Now he doesn't even attempt to bark or howl when leave what a huge relief!! Worth every penny... I rarely review items only when they exceed my expectations and when I think someone else could benefit from it! PS it has speed charger just takes two hours to charge!

We ordered this collar for our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He is a great dog, very gentle and obedient, but at age 2 has started develop a some pretty annoying barking habits. These range from the harmless but annoying, such as seeing a squirrel out the window, barking like crazy at it and then tearing down the stairs to his basement doggy door; to the embarassing such as going absolutely beserk at the mail carrier and anyone else who happens by our house walking a dog. When he goes into this "beserk" stage, he won't listen and can't be stopped from barking/growling until the "intruder" in his space is gone.

We have tried a couple of different products, namely the PetSafe Outdoor Ultrasonic Bark Deterrent (the one shaped like a birdhouse) for outdoors, and PetSafe PBC-1000 Ultrasonic Indoor Bark Control for indoors. The Outdoor unit worked reasonably well, but our dog figured out pretty quickly that if he got far enough back from it (it was placed near the property line to deter barking at the sidewalk), he could still do his thing (including harassing the mail carrier when they got to the front porch.) The Indoor unit seemed to work for about a week, and then lost its effect (I even put brand new batteries in it, but it just seems the noise it emits doesn't bother him that much.)

After reading reviews for virtually every "no bark" collar on Amazon and other sites, we selected the Dogstra No Bark YS300. Unlike the ultrasonic bark deterrents we had been using before, which rely on an unpleasant noise to stop barking, this collar detects the bark and then delivers a "shock" to the dog. I should add that our dog is trained on and completely comfortable with an electric fence, so to some degree he gets the joke of what it means to get a shock. We have been using this collar for 2 weeks, and so far it works like a charm. The first day that the mail arrived, our dog began his usual barking, and immediately received a corrective shock. He let out a little yelp (exactly what he does when shocked by electric collar for invisible fence), and not only did he stop barking, but he settled down, and never went into his "beserk" mode. When he is in his "beserk" mode at the mail carrier, he often shreds the mail. Not this time. Apparently by stopping the barking, it stopped the whole destructive mode.

The dog very quickly figured out that bark = shock, and I think he has only received one or two shocks subsequently. He has also figured out that a low growl does not trigger the shock, nor does a very quiet "woof" that is almost more like a grunt. So he can still alert us if he believes something is not right (like a squirrel has entered his yard.) I should add that the collar has 7 levels of shock severity, and we have it set on the mildest one.

The last thing I will adress is the battery. The Dogstra YS300 uses a rechargeable lithium battery. So far it seems to need charging every 4 days or so. This is not a big deal, we simply take it off of him at night and charge it as you would a cell phone, an i-touch, etc. This may sound like a lot of charing, but we have been thru so many battery ordeals with his electric fence collar and those batteries are so expensive, that I actually like this method better.

I've tried several no bark collars from different manufacturers. I really like this one best because it has a vibration feature that warns the dog before he gets barking. It is easy to adjust and is rechargeable. My dogs are barking herders and these work great.

I have a mini schnauzer and a lab mix who think they need to bark and scream incessantly whenever a car comes up the drive. If you want to visit outdoors with the neighbor, forget it, because they bark the ENTIRE time. I ordered one Dogtra YS300 to use for both dogs.

The pros:

1. It says for small to medium dogs, but is very effective with my lab mix also.

2. It has a vibration warning before the correction.

3. It can be set to vibrate only when the correction is learned.

4. The battery is rechargeable in about 2 hours.

The cons:

1. Even on the LOWEST setting, it is a little too strong for my mini schnauzer. She squealed on the correction of "2" which I did not like. (However, I can set it to vibrate only for her which works well.)

2. The strap is very long, but it can be cut to fit, so not a big "con"

3. My dogs do already know that they can bark when the collar is off, however the duration is shorter.

I will have to update my review in the future in order to address durability.

To make a long story short, I like this collar, and will be ordering another one so that both dogs will have one to wear when we go camping, etc.

Edit to add: It has been two years and the collar still works great. I have absolutely NO problems with this collar. I highly recommend it.

I have one large and one medium sized dog (75 and 55 pounds respectively). I bought the YS500 for the smaller dog because her weight was on the cusp. When it arrived it looked way to big for her so I gave the 500 to my larger dog and ordered a YS300. Finally, the collars looked appropriate for each of them.

I didn't want to use the collars because I wasn't thrilled about shocking my dogs but the smallers habit of charging the front door and barking was getting worse and worse. Finally, I put the collars on periodically without being turned on for several weeks at the advice of my dog trainer so they would not learn to associate the shock with the collar.

Last week I finally turned the collars on. The YS300 at the lowest setting has totally freaked out my small dog. She shreaks when it goes off. She is scared to death. I have been dealing with this and trying very hard to ignore her reaction as she is avoiding the front door so I guess it is working. This has been very upsetting for both myself and my dog.

Here is the warning. If you have more than one dog please be aware that the YS300 can be set-off by another dog. It took a few occassions to be sure of this. My poor little dog has been shocked 3 times now by my larger. Once they were playing and he barked and shocked her. Once they charged the front door and the larger dog barked and shocked her and once my larger dog hacked and it set off her collar. Yes, he hacked and my small dog because she was standing next to him was shocked. Each time she shreaked in fear and doesn't have any idea what she did wrong.

I called Dogtra and they told me that the YS300 has a sensor that can be set-off by other dogs. I wish I saw this in my research. Is this published anywhere as a warning?? It should be! If I had this very important piece of information, I certainly would not have bought the collar. Dogtra's customer service was friendly and told me to mail them the YS300 and they will "make the sensor less sensitive". I guess this is a reasonable customer service response but I'm not really sure how willing I am to keep experimenting on my poor dog.

DOG LOVERS GODSEND: DOGTRA vs TRITRONICS

Tri-Tronics Pro 200 G3 collar is the one I settled on after researching dog e-collars extensively (dogtra and cheaper petco collars). I will write/ link to a more extensive review with pictures and video at a later date. Will provide the url to it in an update but suffice it to say here are some of my findings and I hope this helps a dog lover with an unmanageable/ aggressive dog.

PLEASE, if you are considering `giving up' on your dog read on this is a tool that if used properly can really help your dog become a better citizen despite what people tell you about dogs and shock collars/ e-collars.

E-collars are for dogs that are `hard' dogs. This term refers to an aggressive dog toward other animals or humans and views your commands and hollering as `optional'.

The opposite is a `soft' dog may not follow your instructions but listens and tucks its tail between its legs when you raise your voice these collars SHOULD NOT be used with soft dogs (more on this later). For a very good video on this and how to use e-collars see link below:We have had a rescue for six years and have contemplated getting an e-collar/ shock collar but have been very reluctant b/c it can cause pain to the animal. Last winter we found a small dog abandoned to die in the woods by our house (still makes me very sad to think that people do this). Our shepherd-mix is very aggressive, so the problem we had was she was ready to kill the little guy. Luckily we have a large home and could separate the two dogs and worked on slowly introducing them. Took some 6 months to where we could allow them into the same room (on leashes). Given the big dogs aggression we needed to get her under voice command every time. Also, given her high prey drive and tendency to roam we walk her on a 50ft. leash. She did break the leash a couple of times and it took a good hour to catch her as she would take off chasing an animal in the woods.

Along comes the Tri-Tronics Pro 200 collar. After following the leerburg dvd instructions and some 12 months later I can truly I WISH I HAD BOUGHT THIS SIX YEARS AGO. I can take our big dog off leash in the woods and SHE ALWAYS COMES BACK. I can make her stop in her tracks with my voice command NO. I have used the shock feature about 10 times in one year. Only one time have I used it on a high setting (66% of full power). The rest of the time it has been on low settings (16%) it snaps her out of her prey drive and makes her pay attention to me. I MUST EMPAHSIZE I ALWAYS HAVE DOG TREATS IN MY FANNY PACK for both the little dog and the big one and I FOLLOWED THE DVD INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY. Had I not bought the DVD I would have done it all wrong so I cannot recommend the product enough (see url above).

Why I chose the Tri-Tronics Pro 200:

1. I wanted a collar that would allow me to control my dog from a distance. If you are in the woods and there are rock outcrops the stated distance on e-collars at which you can control your dog drops off considerably. Given how much I love my dogs and how paranoid I was about the distance issue I wanted one that would, without a doubt, control my big dog, whatever the terrain I therefore settled for the one with a range of one mile. Keep in mind I had never used an e-collar but envisaged letting my dog roam free with the little dog (the recent addition) probably following her and wanted to ensure that I could control her over a long distance both dogs off-leash. This was the ultimate goal and I was very unsure how long this would take but wanted to have a collar that would work to satisfy this endpoint.

2. There are two different ways to `shock' your dog. One is `CONTINUOUS' lasts for ~10 seconds the other is a `NICK' last for ~0.5 seconds and is momentary. Reading up and watching all the material I could find I felt that the NICK in the end would be what I used more than the continuous. A year later I can confirm I was right.

3. Gradations More the gradations for the shock nick or continuous the better so I could dial in the exact setting to get our big dogs attention fine tuning the device to her sensitivity.

4. Expandability keep in mind we had just found the second dog. He was small, very badly abused. I wasn't sure with time if he too would turn out to be a stubborn guy so I wanted to be able to use two collars (one on each dog) controlled with one remote (in my hand) if need be. After a year I can say with certainty that this is not the case at all and so I will never use an e-collar on the little fellow. He does wonderfully with my voice commands.

5. The two manufacturers that came to the top early on were Dogtra and Tri-tronics. Each of these manufacturers have several different models and this is where it gets tricky and why I am writing this review (for now without the pictures and videos of my beta-testing). I decided I needed a 1 mile range and as many nick gradations I could get. I looked at the Dogtra 3500 NCP and the Tri-Tronics Pro 200 because they met my criteria. I decided to buy both and then keep the one I felt was best returning the other one.

6. The Dogtra has 127 continuous gradations for both the nick and the continuous mode. It is smaller than the tri-tronics and I was leaning toward this manufacturer. After having bought both to test out I quickly realized that the tri-tronics is actually far better for both the dog and the trainer. The way the e-collar works is there is a component that sits around the dogs neck (the receiver) and the transmitter (you have in your hand). The component on the dog's neck has two prongs that push into the dog's neck and this is what carries the electric shock to the animal after you press the button on the transmitter. The prongs on the Dogtra were brutal. They were significantly more pronounced and pushed into the dogs neck in a way that I thought was excessive, especially when compared to the Tri-tronics design. Keep in mind I was using the SMALLEST prongs from both manufacturers. The prongs have threads that screw into the receiver and you get a couple of different sizes in each box. Dogtra is a Korean company and I felt that keeping the dog comfortable while it has the receiver around its neck was not a priority and came through in the design. Remember the receiver is only activated for a very small fraction of the time the dog has this around its neck. This was something that I never did see in any reviews and was surprised to find out when I actually had both units in my hand and was beta-testing them for my use.

7. The Dogtra has 127 gradations while the Tri-Tronics Pro 200 has 18 for Nick and still fewer 6 for Continuous. On the face of it I thought this was a major drawback with the Tri-Tronics Pro 200. Also, the Tri-Tronics Pro 200 has a bigger transmitter (the part that sits in your hand). Surprisingly the Tri-Tronics is really a more thoughtful design and SUPERIOR product despite having less fidelity in the transmitter. Turns out the 18 gradations for the Nick and the 6 for continuous in the Tri-Tronics Pro 200 ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH. IMO there is also a design flaw in the Dogtra transmitters (regardless of model #) that again I only discovered because I bought both and was trying them out side-by-side and I haven't seen mentioned anyplace.

The Dogtra feels like a thick cell phone (think Motorola startac vintage but 2x thicker) that has a knurled knob where the antennae would go that you rotate and as you rotate it the level changes in a little LED screen on the face of the device, displaying the setting value (between 1 and 127). As you rotate it the value changes from 1 127. You have two rubberized buttons labeled nick or continuous positioned on the side of the instrument (where the volume buttons on a cell phone would be). You also have a vibrate button (more about this later) but this is on the face of the device above the LED display.The Tri-Tronics Pro 200 has a knob on the top, with hard stops, and these go from 1-6. This device looks like a 2D maglite flashlight, albeit smaller and lighter. On the SIDE of the cylindrical device you have three buttons that control the levels of the shock low, middle and high. Take a look at the picture else it will be very confusing.So, if you set the knob on TOP of the device to a 3 and press the low button on the SIDE of the device the dog get a nick at the 3 level. If you press the middle button instead (again on the SIDE) the dog is now nicked at a 9 level. If you press the low and middle buttons together the dog is now nicked at a level 12. So, you are ramping the level at which your dog is being shocked very rapidly. The third button is colored red and will provide a continuous shock (for ~10 secs) at a high setting (keep in mind the knob on the top stays at a 3 in each of the scenarios I listed). This is VERY IMPORTANT in your training and let me give you a real scenario where this became CRITICAL.

My large dog was out in the woods and as I have mentioned she has an incredibly high prey drive. She saw a woodchuck and took off after it down a valley (this is after we got the e-collars but were still testing them out). She was off leash b/c of how well the e-collars worked out. She had the Tri-Tronics Pro 200 on that day. I use it at a "3" on the top of the device and press the low button to get her attention. So, I am nicking her at 16% of the full power. Once she had locked onto the Woodchuck and took off I could not get her attention at this setting or the middle setting. I was worried she would catch and kill the woodchuck and so I pressed the red button, again with the setting on the top remaining unchanged and still at 3 (Here it is 66% of full power). She came back squealing really quickly. This has been the ONLY time in a little over a year that I used the high setting on her and I have never had a problem stopping her with a NO voice command since. Had I had the Dogtra system I would have had to have fiddled with the knob first, raised the setting level, and then pressed the continuous shock button. In the heat of the moment I am quite sure I would not have gotten this right and it would have taken me longer because I would have been messing with device. With the Tri-Tronics set up you are pressing a large button, without even really looking at the device in your hand. So, I went from pressing one button to pressing one above it almost reflexive never taking my eye off my dog. I think if you are training you want there not to be a time lag of any kind so there is no confusion in the dogs mind. Also, in this instance, I was able to avoid an untoward incident. If you have an aggressive dog you need to be able to switch to the highest setting instantly, without taking your eye off the dog.

8. Both units clearly work well. I think the Tri-Tronics Pro 200 is a better unit. If you have a dog that you are considering euthanizing or giving up for adoption because of behavior issues PLEASE CONSIDER trying an e-collar Dogtra or Tritronics in conjunction with the video I mention above. You will find your dog changes dramatically within a week. If you follow the instructions and the prep work in the video to the letter the first 15 minutes where you actually use the e-collar on the animal will have a DRAMATIC impact on behavior. Please do the prep work, it takes about 2 weeks but the results are truly stunning.

It took us rescuing our little dog to actually look into an e-collar for the Shepherd-mix. I wish we had done this sooner because she now roams without a leash and really enjoys herself on walks where before she was always on leash. I am happy to report the two dogs are now best of friends and the little fella actually loves the Shepherd more than he does us.

Purchased this collar to help train our stubborn husky. Product arrived and already did not work. The remote has 7 buttons (one for each "static" level and one for vibration)and 3 of the levels (the lower power levels of course) did not work. Also, appeared to be "used" since the collar was scuffed. Directions in the box were for a different unit. We will now be returning on our dime and finding a functioning collar elsewhere. Please don't waste your money!

I got the shock collar as a last resort for my very intelligent male terrier mix. I nic-named him Houdini because he was able to get out of almost any confinement. He will run for a half and hour to forty-five minutes. It made going to the dog park very stressful.

I've only had the collar a week and his behavior is impeccable as long as he has the shock collar on. I hope I'll be able to trust him without the collar in the near future.

I was looking for a way to communicate with the seller because I'm thinking about getting a collar for my female.

She's much better behaved that her brother, but she still has running and barking issues. The good thing is that when she runs, she's back within five minutes.

I need to know if every collar is on the same frequency. I can't have my dogs wearing the same collars if both are on the same frequency.

We first heard about these treats while in Estes Park, Co on vacation. We purchased them for our Golden Retriever and Lab who absolutely loved them and begged for more. We had to start limiting the treats or we would have gone through the bag in a day! The treats are in large chunks, but can easily be broken into smaller pieces as needed. I love that the treats are all natural and are from grass fed bison. The dogs love them because they taste great!

Innotek Basic Contain and Train System

I like the idea of a containment system like this, which allows you to correct and contain. However, I think the implementation of the dog collars is severly lacking as far as the durability. When it is working, it does discourage the dogs from leaving our property. Since we have 1 1/2 acres of land, and 2 German short hair pointers, it is essential that they get exercise, but not leave the surrounding areas. It works fine when it is working, and the training does work good. But the collars seem to go bad within a couple of months, and the batteries need replacing on a very regular schedule every two months. And the batteries are relativity expensive (Usually over $6 at Radio shack, or higher). Thus it does cost more than $75 a year just for batteries. But in two years I have had to buy more than 7 collars just to have two that work. And the company doesn't seem to care much. I am sending 4 collars back to them to have them see why they have gone bad, but I had to suggest this, and ask them to study it. Furthermore, they did not say we would be happy to replace them, just that we will study why they went bad. They all exhibit the same problem and failure mode. I just think the engineering lacks something and they must have had a bad part in it that fails for some reason or other. I would seriously tell someone not to buy this product line from them, maybe another vendor, or try another line in their product lines, like I am, the IUC version (I am using the SD-3100 version). Since I have spent over $1200 over the past two years on trying to keep dogs in, I am not happy with this product. I will try their new version, but if it does not work, then I will switch vendors.

The other thing that does irritate, is that they have the zone system, but it does not work with the SD train and contain line. So you must spend some more money for another type of collar and system. Why can't they just have a universal system that all of the extras work with? And please don't give my some mumbo jumbo about it, for I am an engineer and know what does and doesn't work, and what can be designed and what can't. Like my sign said in my classroom "I always wanted to be and Engineer, now I are one". I don't know if the new IUC line works with the contain n train, because the literature is severly lacking and un-informative as to how things work, and what they work with.

While I can't compare this to other containment collars, I can remark on my experience with this system alone.

My chocolate lab has gone through four collars, one failed outright within the warranty period, three have cost me around $40 from Innotek. My dog's not particularly rough on the collars, but if there were means to open the collar receiver, I may have been able to repair the unit myself. Two of the instances, the parts inside the receiver can be heard rattling around inside. While the support staff is very helpful, I feel that I've have paid for this system twice by now, in the "warranty replacment" collars I've received (at a fee). I've read that Innotek's QC has fallen to the wayside, and if I didn't have to return this collar in order to get a new one, I'd take the chance on cracking it open to attempt a repair.

When working, it runs fine. Like other systems, read the directions, know the limitations, and it will work as advertised.

Hagen Dogit Twister Treat Dispensing Toy

I bought this for my corgi. He started chewing the green coating off the bone "handle" on the top so I had to stop using it. It is also difficult to open and close. Would recommend for a dog that doesn't chew, but it wasn't a good fit for my dog.

I bought this to keep my chorkiedoodle to keep her occupied she was afraid of it, so passed it on to a friend's mini-pin who also didn't like it, so we tried the bichon frese who also was not willing to play with it. Maybe needs to be gifted to a much larger dog.

Four dogs. They were hard pressed to keep these away from the cats. Had to break one up for the cats so the dogs could eat theirs. These are hard chews and I had to use a hammer to break it up for the cats.

Larger dogs will go through these pretty fast, but they are worth the pleasure I know they had munching on them. My smaller guys chewed 5-10 minutes.

For a long chew, the Tendons are one of the best, but I will order these again since all my fuzzy friends flipped over them...

I have a picky rottweiler mix who, despite her rottie heritage, really isn't a tough chewer. She won't even carry something in her mouth if it's "too heavy" and she won't chow down on something if it's too tough. I bought one of these at a local pet store just to see if she would eat it, and I was totally shocked when she wolfed it down. I have drawers full of various bones and treats that I end up having to donate to charity so I had pretty much given up on trying new things, but I'm glad I found these!

I can't find them anymore at the local store so I'm left ordering them on Amazon..started giving them to her after dinner and now that's all she wants! They don't seem to stain but they do break up into a lot of pieces, and she's not very "drooly" maybe it would stain the carpet if she was.

Also, these can be eaten pretty fast. They're more like pork ears than a rawhide or bone, they break up pretty fast once the dog starts eating them. All in all, though, I love giving them to her and I LOVE Jones Natural chews. We've tried a bunch of their bones and love them all! (well, most of them she's picky!) They also have good guides as to what kind of bone to buy for your dog based on their chewing preference and size.

I have two chihuahuas. There is no way a chihuahua can hold it all day, either in a kennel or out. Their little bladders are not big enough. Plus, they do not like cold weather or rain and getting them to potty outside is an effort in futility. I have tried every puppy pad at the local retail stores and figured out these were the best. They are quilted so they do not bunch up. My youngest dog cannot chew them up like she does the blue ones. Why they chew them up, I have no clue....it's a puppy thing! I have been buying the 24 pack of this brand pad at my local Wally mart for $7.00. They are $10 at the grocery store! The most important thing for a wee-wee pad is that it not let any liquid seep through and ruin the hardwood floors. This brand allows urine to seep through almost immediately. They are also slightly smaller than other brands we have used. Still looking for a brand that does not allow ANY seepage. This doesn't seem like much to ask, but so far all the brands we've tried allow leakage because the plastic is porous.

The pad absords the urine and locks in the smell. I have been able to purchase them at my local Walgreens since July 2011 for $10.00 for a package of 50. I have been using the Hartz Training Academy Wee Wee Pads for almost 3 years for my Chihuahua Dacshund mix. I love them and she loves them but unfortunately no more. Initially you couldn't beat the price. Walgreens always had the 50 pre priced pack for $10. Now Hartz has added another element to the wee wee pad (ANTI BACTERIAL). I bought one pack and wasted a good ten dollars. At the moment I opened this pack I smelled a very strong disinfectant odor eminating from the bag. Sure enough the new anti bacterial is saturated with this smell that offends me and I surely wouldn't subject my dog to it. This product has helped train my two counter-surfing dogs to keep their paws out of the kitchen. I made the decision to get it after I came home and the gas stove was on. They must have accidentally turned it on while scrabbling around.

I was worried about using a shock deterrent, but drastic measures needed to be taken. The shock from the 9V battery is not awful (I've stepped on it many times), but it's enough to let them know they are going somewhere they shouldn't.

The dimensions of this scat mat were not listed by the seller and I think that would be useful. I was surprised by how long and skinny it was because the picture made it seem wider.

So far so good. Started using the Litter Champ 5 days ago and still haven't had to change the bag. We've used Litter Lockers for 2 yrs and with the Litter Champ you instantly enjoy the EASE of use. No turning of the handle, no touching the lid to lift like you have to with the Litter Locker.

PROS CLEANER than Litter Locker, no turning required of the unit, don't have to touch the lid. Haven't noticed any odor from the bags the fragrance mentioned in a previous review is extremely faint.

CONS the magnet for the scoop is only on ONE side....we can't turn the unit to sit in our bathroom because the magnet faces the side we need to have flush with the wall. Bad design oversight on their part. I can probably super glue another magnet to the other side to remedy the problem.

The litter locker's main problem is having to rotate the large handle in the middle. Sometimes the bag slips off the turn shaft or when taking the bag out it snags and tears open. :(

THE LITTER CHAMP has none of these issues. All ease of use. Save for the magnetic scoop only going on ONE side. Also our older scoops fit easily into the opening it's a quite large opening.

UPDATE -It's been a few months since we first bought the Litter Champ and we still give it top ratings. Still on the FIRST set of bags that came with it!! Also ordered another Litter Champ. We have no issue with odor and I have a great sense of smell. (a reviewer on Petco assumed we had poor sense of smell since they could smell urine when they opened the lid to make a deposit) I've VERY sensitive to cat odors and I am allergic even! I usually put the bathroom fan on while cleaning the box to help while opening/closing the unit -but have never noticed any lingering odor afterward) The Litter Locker bags break occasionally leaving a nasty mess to clean -which leaves a MAJOR odor. Save yourself the hassle and test a Litter Champ.

UPDATE JUNE 2011: owned 2 of these LITTER CHAMPS for +2 yrs and LOVE them. I have read other reviews complain about the bags having a fragrance but I cannot smell it unless I sniff it when replacing with a new one. (however I keep the Litter Champ in a low traffic area so I cannot smell the fragrance in the bags. I can see how it would be detectable in a small bathroom)

I donated our 2 litter lockers to a rescue center.

We have three indoor cats and our cat boxes are kept in an area that human's dwell as well, so it has been a challenge to find a litter disposal system that works to keep the smell at a minimum.

I'm happy to report that this product works quite well and has done an outstanding job controlling the odor. The bag (while expensive to replace) is easy to change and the foot pedal to open the can works well.

This product would get a five star rating if the scoop were more sturdy or the opening was larger (to allow other scoops to be used). Because the opening in the can is sized for the provided scoop and you actually push it open to deposit the litter, you have to use their scoop. We've resorted to using our large metal scoop to loosen everything up, then use the plastic scoop to try and minimize the risk of the handle snapping.

Overall, it is a very good product and easy to use. While the bags are expensive to replace, we've had it about a month and even with three cats we are on the original bag. By the way the bags are biodegradable, so they get extra points for that!

While better than just dumping litter into a bag, this product is inferior to Litter Locker products. First, the foot lever doesn't open the canister, but a lid over a rigid flap. To open the rigid flap in order to dispose of feces, you have to push down on it with the scoop that is full of feces and the bottom of which was also in the litter pan. This means the flap is contaminated--this is not a touch-free system. Second, the interior of the canister picked up the smell of feces on the very first use, so the unit smells even when it's empty. Because the bottom of the interior of the canister is not raised at the circumference (that is, it's not concave), you can't add a layer baking soda to decrease the smell. That's not odor free. Third, essentially you're just filling a bag with feces. This bag is quite heavy and really needs to be cut and tied off before it's so full that you can't use the interior cutter. You can use scissors, but the idea is that this is supposed to make life easier. Finally, the last thing I want to do with a scoop I just used to pick up feces is attach it to the exterior of a canister, where the cat can knock it around.

By contrast, the Litter Locker has these benefits: When you open the lid, there is a large aperture for disposing of feces. You don't touch any surface with the scoop. You also don't need to be standing upright because there isn't a foot pedal that you need to depress to keep the lid open. Second, the plastic of the canister does not pick up the smell of feces to any great extent. The bottom of the canister is flat, so you can add baking soda. Third, although this is also a continuous bagging system, the bag is wound around a spindle. This decreases smell by functionally sealing each deposit. When you open the lid, you don't get the blast of odor from a giant bag of feces as you do with the Litter Champ. Fourth, when you cut the bag with the internal cutter (which is awkward and not a strength of this product), you then knot it off, lift the spindle, place it over your garbage bag and pull it apart. The bag slides off and you don't need to touch it at all. Fifth, there is a removable plastic pocket for the scoop so it's not just hanging out there on the side of the canister. Finally, the Litter Locker is narrower than the Litter Champ, and much less tall. This makes it easier to use: Less distance to convey the feces means less chance of spilling feces or particles of litter, and you don't need to stand to use it. The lower profile lets you tuck it under a shelf.

We bought both products. Litter Champ is the inferior one.

I had been on a quest for the right litter disposal system. I have used both Litter Locker and now Litter Champ, each have their benefits but Litter Champ is just right for me. I have three cats and need to clean the super size box twice a day. My super size scoop fits inside the Litter Champ with no problem. The bags are less expensive than Litter Locker mainly because they last longer. Litter Champ uses a similar "continuous feed" sleeve-type bag as Litter Locker but it sits in the can until it is full or you change it out. Here is a recap of the benefits of each to help you decide which is better for you, I would write more prose but It is late and I'm tired. By the way, the scoops that come with either of these units are too small in my opinion.

Litter Champ pros:

We have 4 cats and used 2 Litter Lockers for about 2 years and liked them just fine. But, the cartridges didn't seem to last very long (I shudder to think of someone using at as instructeda full rotation each use). I took a chance on 1 Litter Champ and within a week I purchased another one. I can't believe how great this product is! My husband and I run with our 50lb. lab mix all the time and this makes it so much more manageable and easy! It is so easy to use and the waist band is adjustable. We can keep her really close to us or give her 3-4 feet of room by a simple adjustment to the leash length. There is even a great padded handle closer to where the leash hooks to her collar so that when we can see her eyeing some geese, another dog or just need to give someone else more space to walk on a tight path, we can reach down to grab it and have full control over her.

Bought to use with my 70lb lab so i could be hands free to push the baby stroller. Works great! Wouldn't recommend for a dog that can't heel at least reasoably well. We use in combo with a gentle leader. The material feels high quality, cannot foresee any issues with the clasps or buckles breaking. Like the adjustability options. Only thing that would make it better is if I could adjust it to be a little shorter to keep the dog right at my side instead of slightly in front of me.

If you have one or two dogs...I think this unit would be great! This unit seems to be working well for the two big dogs in the house but it is doing very little to halt the little dogs from barking when someone comes to the door. You can see them shake their head when they hear the noise but seems like it is not quite enough to make them stop.

On the positive side....you REALLY can see that it is making a sound that the dogs can hear...and it HAS stopped the big dogs from any barking at all. I guess it was not designed to halt an entire pack....at least....not 4 little dogs.

I've been buying the LIVER chiplets for over ten years and now they have stopped making them and substituted with carrot and peanut butter. I'm sure this is due to the cost of producing the better liver product but they've lost my business to the tune of 12 to 15 bags of the 16 ounce chiplets per year. The Dachshunds love them. Small enough for treats for small dog. Difficult to break up into small tidbits, but it can be done. We keep these in the office for clients to use for treats for our dogs. Love the resealable package that really reseals!

Midwest Ultima Pro Series Dog Crate

This is a high quality crate. The wires are thick and well put together. The crate does not wobble at all. The removable doors are one of the selling points that led me to buy this. It is hard to find removable doors on crates. Also, I am able to roll the crate in one direction (there are strong rolls of plastic on the bottom wires). It makes cleaning under the cage easy since you do not have to lift it.

Our dog is strong and likes to jump against the crate and is a heavy chewer, yet the crate can stand all the force. I can really see this lasting a very long time. Even the plastic tray is thick. Also, there are no sharp edges. It comes with a DVD that will help you crate your dog (I had no use for it).

If you are buying a crate, spend the extra money and go for the Ultima Pro.

Our dog took less than a year to destroy a similarly priced, low-end crate purchased from my local chain pet store. The crate was fine, but she chewed her way through the door. After weeks of research, this crate looked like the only one that might survive. Glad I made the purchase. Yes, this is one of the most expensive crates I found, but if your dog is destroying the cheaper ones as fast as mine was, this is a bargain in the long run. The wires are spaces much more closely together than on other crates, so she cannot get her mouth on them to chew. The door overlaps the crate (the inside part of the overlap is the only part she can chew). And the wires are MUCH thicker than on any other crate I've seen. Even on the one part she can chew, she can barely bend it. The welds seem tougher too. I like the three doors, it gives us more options in how to place the crate in the room. My only problem is that the plastic pan on the bottom easily slides out, and sometimes I will come home and it is halfway out of the crate.

I ordered this crate in the size 37in. x 24.5 x 28 for my 5 month old American Pitbull Terrier Male. Im glad I did, instead of ordering the flimsy iCrate or lifestages crate. They are just too noisy, especially with an already 40lb Puppy inside it.

I thought this was a much better deal because I did not want to spend $200 on one of the super strong crates I was originally looking at. I feel like this one will work just fine and will be strong/safe enough for my Dog. I really like how there is a lot less rattling. I wish there was a better slide out crate pan though. It seems to be the same as all the other ones.

Pro's:

-No rattling

-Much sturdier/better quality

-Price isn't that bad

Con's:

-Front door latches are difficult to lock and unlock (Atleast on the one I got)

-Was shipped in the same box it came in without any extra protection (Box was a bit banged up)

-Slide out crate pan doesn't seem any more durable then the ones in the other crates.

All in all, I would definetly recommend this crate for anyone wanting something higher quality and long lasting. It's great for people with stronger pets, who may do some damage to a weaker crate.

We are fostering a 55lb Female Pit who was severely abused, starved etc etc. We tried FIVE crates prior to this one all of which she either broke out of or destroyed. The crate is fairly thick (although I was expecting a little thicker). She has yet to bend any of the wires after about 3 weeks (with others she did it after one day). The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because the door latch hinges are not as strong as I would have liked. I bought some zip ties and just tied those down so she could not open the gate (trust me she has done it in the past). If this crate can contain our crazy foster Pit I guarantee this thing will hold up to whatever dog you may have.

I purchased several of these in the smallest size about a year ago from Amazon.com. Every one of them arrived with a different small defect. Various hinges and latches were bent just enough to not work without some repair. The hinges don't always line up right for the doors to close easily. The clips to hold in the tray do not line up properly on a single one of my crates. I think this is just poor design, not a defect. This is the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars.

Otherwise, they are very nice, thick, and sturdy crates. We stack them and attach them together with thick zip strips, and we find this a stronger, more sturdy setup than the Midwest stacking crates. We didn't see the point before we got them, but now we love having the 3 doors. It makes things so much easier and more flexible to arrange. The insert to make the crate smaller for puppies is very nice as well. These crates become our dogs' homes for mealtimes and bedtimes, so it is well worth it to spend a little more to get good, sturdy quality that will last.

FYI, the rectangle brand-label tag on one of the doors is magnetic. We purchased custom name plates for our crates and a roll of sticky magnet strip at a craft store. With the magnets on the back of the name plates, we can easily switch around the names on top of the door tags. It works great.

I returned the Midwest brand crate bowl holders because they seemed to present a hazard to the dog when not holding a bowl. Instead, I purchased wing nut crate bowl holders at an AKC dog show vendor booth and anchored them with extra zip strips. I own the SportDog ProHunter 2400, and added two of these collars to give me three in total.

The collars work great, I've never had a problem with them. I've replaced the rechargeable batteries after 2 years of use, which is normal given how I allowed them to totally discharge.

The ProHunter 2400 has its limitations, but that is not what this review is about. The collars work every time, and are very rugged. We have 3 large breed dogs who play hard, they haven't so much as scratched them.

Note: these are unsuitable for small breed dogs given the collar size.

Got the Add a collar for my son and he said it was working great (once I called and get it programed and added on :-) ) a very good product and arrived when i needed it.
